ARCHIVED - Lights, camera, action: Cartagena chosen as the headquarters of the Film Commission
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The project will promote Cartagena and the rest of the Murcia Region as an ideal location for movies, TV shows and commercials
It’s all action in Cartagena as the municipality will soon play host to the Film Commission, a project aimed at making the location an attractive set for the production of films, TV series, music videos, advertising, documentaries and other audiovisual programmes. Basing the Commission in Cartagena will be supported with a one million euro investment from the 2023 budget.
In order to support the audiovisual arts industry in the Region, a network of municipal film offices will be established which will be coordinated by the Cartagena Film Commission. Together they will endeavour to attract more cinematic projects to the area through a range of bonuses, incentives and tax exemptions.
A campaign will also be launched to showcase the dynamic filming locations the Region has to offer and the plethora of local companies and business that available to supply the audiovisual sector. This is in addition to the deal signed earlier this year between Cartagena and Netflix to use the Murcia locality as a base for the streaming giant’s projects in Spain.
The local film offices will play a “crucial role” in guaranteeing the visibility of their municipality as an ideal film set, Minister of Culture, Marcos Ortuño, explained, adding that their staff will be responsible for promotions and liaising with any local government departments involved, as well as being the first point of contact for film professionals and local and international producers.
A collaboration agreement has also been signed with the Union of Audiovisual Associations of the Region of Murcia, whose experts will be on hand with technical advice for the implementation and development of the Film Commission.
Meetings will be held with all the municipalities in the Region before the end of the month to inform them of the membership requirements.
A webpage highlighting the range of possible set locations in the Region is underway and when it’s fully developed, production companies will also be able to manage any filming applications and permits and enlist the help of local services.
