ARCHIVED - Mazarrón police remove Camposol squatters and arrest drunk driver
ARCHIVED ARTICLE All in a day’s work!!!
Since increasing their presence on the Camposol Urbanisation, Policia Local have been called on several times to assist residents in dealing with potentially difficult situations, amongst them squatters.
It’s not uncommon for police to be called in to deal with squatters in areas frequented by holidaymakers, as large numbers of uninhabited properties can be found all along the coast.
Properties known to be empty for long periods of time are often targeted by “okupas” or squatters, particularly those which have been built by companies now bankrupt and have never been occupied. There are several urbanisations around the Mazarrón area in which there are unoccupied properties, including the Camposol Urbanisation, and from time to time attempts are made by okupas to move into uninhabited buildings.
This week police were called in to deal with squatters on the C- Sector of the Camposol Urbanisation when a property was targeted for the second time by okupas.
Several weeks ago residents on C15 called the councillor for foreign residents, Silvana Buxton, after hearing squatters breaking into a vacant property with a jackhammer.
Silvana , in turn, notified the police, and the Policia Local arrived promptly, evicting the trespassers. During the following week the door was repaired and a new lock fitted.
However, last week another set of okupas, who had been evicted from a different empty property on the urbanisation, broke into the same property on C15 after breaking the newly fitted lock.
In order to make their new home more comfortable, they had also stolen and installed a water meter from a nearby derelict property, hiding it behind building rubble.
Silvana was once again called for advice, and once again the Policia Local who were already on the urbanisation carrying out traffic patrol duties rapidly arrived at the scene, escorting the okupas and their luggage off the premises and into the back of a waiting Police van, removing them completely from the urbanisation.
Local residents attempting to replace the lock again found that the okupas had fitted a new lock of their own and amidst the confusion of their departure had somehow managed to lock it. This new lock was in turn disabled to prevent the intruders from opening the door easily again.
Aqualia have since been to the premises, photographed the stolen water meter, disconnected and removed it, also isolating the supply in the pavement and cutting the supply pipe back so that any further attempt at reconnection would be made considerably more difficult.
The local police have also continued to keep an eye on the traffic situation, successfully nicking a driver who failed to stop when requested to do so by the police on Wednesday evening and was subsequently arrested for drinking and driving.
