ARCHIVED - Mazarron among the 15 poorest municipalities in Spain
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Six municipalities in the Region of Murcia feature in the bottom 50 'low income' ranking in Spain
A report which, in addition to measuring other 'urban indicators', sought to identify the poorest municipalities in Spain has ranked Mazarrón in 15th position at a national level.
With an average per capita income of 8,667 euros, residents in Mazarrón have one of the lowest incomes in Spain, according to the National Institute of Statistics based on data collected in 2019. And worryingly, this figure could now be lower still following a two-year Covid pandemic.
And Mazarrón isn't alone in the bottom of the income pile with Jumilla (per capita income of 8,943 euros), La Unión (8,968), Torre Pacheco (9,016), San Pedro del Pinatar (9,133) and Yecla (9,256), also amongst Spain's 50 'poorest' municipalities.
Jumilla has been ranked in 25 place, followed by, La Unión (28th), Torre Pacheco (31st), San Pedro del Pinatar (38th), and Yecla (46th). Although outside of the bottom 50, Lorca (with 9,554 ) and Cartagena (with 10,821) have also been identified as being "urban belts with the lowest income".
Pozuelo de Alarcón in Madrid is the municipality with the highest average income and the lowest unemployment rate in Spain, with 26,367 euros, which is three times that of the municipalities in Murcia with the least resources.
In contrast, Cartagena is also one of those with the lowest proportion of employment in the service sector, with 72%, while the Mérida belt reaches 92.1%.
Of the 15 municipalities with the lowest estimated average unemployment rates for 2021, six are in the Community of Madrid, four in Catalonia, three in the Basque Country and two in Galicia.
The report also analysed family sizes, in particular the number of children per mother, and Lorca proved to be the municipality in Spain with the second highest number of 'offspring per woman', according to the statistics 'Urban Indicators 2022' published on Monday May 23 by the INE.
Lorca women have 1.61 children, behind Melilla, where the figure rises to 1.97.
In sixth place is Cartagena, with 1.47 children per mother.
