ARCHIVED - Our furry friends are in trouble too....abandoned dogs, charities without funds and animals left to starve
People may be adopting pets simply in order to justify breaking the confinement restrictions
For a long time members of the Spanish public have been urged to consider adopting pets rather than buying them at high prices in an effort to reduce the number of stray and abandoned animals in rescue homes and shelters, but one of the more unexpected consequences of the coronavirus emergency is reported to be the risk that people are now doing so en masse simply in order to have a valid excuse to leave their homes a couple of times a day.
During the current lockdown dog owners are allowed to leave home briefly in order to take their pets for walks (although only for short distances and brief periods of time), and the public prosecution service warns that there may be a sudden sharp increase in the number of dogs being abandoned once the confinement comes to an end. In anticipation of this possibility the service is pressing for any owner behaving in this way to be punished severely.
Some animal protectorates are reporting an increased number of enquiries from individuals looking for dogs, and although there are some cases in which the dogs will undoubtedly go to loving homes, there are also genuine fears that the dogs will be abandoned as the public prosecution service fears.
For true animal lovers it is barely imaginable that people could treat the ownership of a pet in such a crass manner, but there are so many examples of people being determined to beat the lockdown in any way they can that such behaviour is, unfortunately, a strong possibility and in some cases, a reality.
Other scenarios which are already starting to play out in some areas are those of hunters releasing "surplus dogs", second home owners releasing dogs normally left as guard dogs in rural properties from weekend to weekend, or even weekend property owners leaving dogs to starve to death, locked inside closed property compounds.
Certainly even in the countryside around our own home we've noticed stray dogs appearing, something which hasn´t been so apparent during the last few years, so if you do hear a dog barking incessantly in a closed country property it's worth ahving a quick check to see if it's OK.
Of course for the charity dog protectorates working within the expat community the problems faced at the moment are many.
Several charities dedicate their efforts to rehoming dogs abroad, but are currently unable to send dogs in their car to their new homes in this way due to the restrictions of movement imposed on all Spanish land borders at the moment.
This leaves the problem of urgent foster homes being required for dogs and cats which are currently stranded in Spain.
Another problem faced by our local charities is financing. Most of our animal charities depend on donations, fundraising via musical events, markets and their shops, all of which are currently closed and events cancelled with us all locked down.
But there are still vet fees to be paid, animals requiring ongoing treatment, animals to be fed and housed, some of them in paid kennels and livery stables and others in establishments run by the charities.
And there is also the problem of mobility, with charities unable to run around and ask volunteers to undertake tasks due to the lockdown.
So if you are genuinely able to foster short or long-term, or have always intended to bring a pet into your home, now could be the time, providing you are willing to make that long-term commitment.
Or if that simply isn´t possible, then can you donate to help the charities maintain liquidity during this difficult period????
(If you would like your charity included in this list, please send donation details to contact@murciatoday.com. We're fully aware there are many missing from the list, but there are just not enough pairs of hands here to trawl the internet looking for more info).
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

Our local area groups are as follows. These are designed to filter locally specific information and may be used by clubs, charities, any of the businesses who work with us to ensure information is available to residents in English and for those living in the specific areas. They are not buy and sell groups, do not accept any bickering or argumentative so and so's, are not "open for any old rubbish" pages, and are not trying to compete with your local comunity groups, they are specifically for sharing good, relevant local information and we hope you will use them for that during this difficult time.
