Coronavirus data in Spain continues to improve but health experts are preparing for the winter months
The latest report from the Ministry of Health shows another vast improvement in the evolution of the pandemic, with the incidence rate in the vulnerable population dropping below 500 cases and hospital and intensive care admissions in steady decline. Nevertheless, health authorities are preparing for another potential wave in the coming months.
A total of 14 EU countries will participate in the joint purchase of the vaccine, which will hopefully “guarantee the maximum preparation as we approcah the autumn and winter months,” Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides said in a statement.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has registered 19,417 new cases of coronavirus since the last update, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,245,996.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen 82.32 points since Friday to stand at 475.95 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 558.27 infections registered in the previous health report.
In the past two weeks, 26,796 positive infections have been registered in this age group.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 722.71 cases, followed by septuagenarians (485.46), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (340.35). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 217 cases to 183.37, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Andalucia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (213.21 cases). Every regions has now dropped below the 1,000-case threshold.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Hospital admissions have seen another decrease, dropping to 7,836 patients, which is 597 fewer than on Friday, while 431 people are being treated in Spain’s ICUs for more serious conditions, a reduction of 29.
This means that 4.96% of all intensive care beds are now occupied by Covid patients. ICUs in Catalonia are under the most pressure at present, with an occupancy rate of 8.56%, followed by Madrid (8.28%), the Basque Country (8.20%) and Castilla-La Mancha (7.16%).
Since the last update, another 273 Covid-related fatalities have been recorded across Spain, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the pandemic to 110,713.
The Canary Islands (40), the Valencian Community (38) and Madrid (32) have reported the most deaths in the last week.
Vaccination data
As of August 3, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,130,245 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,251,854 people have received at least one dose, 93.0% of the population over 12 years of age.
