ARCHIVED ARTICLE The Monday effect is felt again; a fall on Monday followed by a rise on Tuesday as weekend figures are adjusted.

The total number of “active cases in Spain is now 62,130.
Figures presented on Tuesday lunchtime, compiled from data submitted during Monday from the 17 regional health services of Spain:
Number of cases:228,030 (426 in the last 24 hours)
Number of recoveries: 138,980 (1,841 in the last 24 hours)
Number of fatalities: 26,920 (176 in the last 24 hours)
As expected, the Tuesday Covid case figures showed an increase in both the numbers of deaths and new cases, although the actual numbers are still considerably lower than in previous weeks, confirming the current overall downward trend.
Data presented on Mondays has become notoriously unreliable due to the lack of staff over the weekend, artificially low figures becoming the norm during the last few weeks; last week for example, only 465 cases were notified on Monday but by Tuesday the number of new cases was back up to 1,034 and remained consistent at this level for the remainder of the week.
This week exactly the same thing has occurred; yesterday the number of deaths was reported as being 123, but today the figure has risen to 176, which is 43 higher than yesterday although still comfortably below the 200 mark and folllowing a downward trajectory.
The number of new confirmed cases also followed the same pattern; 373 new cases were reported yesterday but today the figure has risen to 426.
This brings the total figure of confirmed cases in Spain to date, up to 228,030 confirmed by PCR swab testing. If the rapid tests are also taken into consideration, this brings the total number of cases in Spain up to 269,520. (Note that the WHO counting method only includes cases confirmed by PCR hence the reason that deaths in care homes etc which have not been tested by PCR due to a lack of testing equipment during the peak weeks of the pandemic are not included).
The bulk of the new cases are in just four of the autonomous communities, these being Cataluña (184), Castilla y León (53), Madrid (48) and Castilla-La Mancha (44), which together account for 77% of the new known infections.
It’s no coincidence that these are the same areas excluded from phase 1 of the de-escalation process and it’s also logical that these should be the same areas accounting for 72% of the deaths yesterday; Cataluña (66), Madrid (37) and Castilla-La Mancha (25).
Again, this same geographical concentration is reflected in the number of hospitalisations (513 new hospitalisations on Monday); more than half of the new hospitalisations being in Cataluña (318).
This brings the total number of active cases in Spain to 62,130, a positive evolution.
