August 23 to 26 Cartagena hosts The Ocean Race Europe, one of the toughest sailing events in the continent
A host of events on the seafront in Cartagena as competitors arrive after a 1,400-mile leg from Cowes
Competitors in The Ocean Race Europe, one of Europe’s leading sailing events, are now on their way to Cartagena having begun their leg from Cowes in the Isle of Wight on a route of approximately 1,400 nautical miles (with a brief stop in Matosinhos-Oporto during the week).
The early lead was taken by the crew of Paprec Arkéa after they started at the historic Royal Yacht Squadron, which in 1973 was used for the Whitbread Round the World Race de 1973 (the precursor of The Ocean Race).
The latest news is that the lead has been taken by Paul Meilhat and the crew of Biotherm, and when they reach Cartagena the city is hosting a huge range of events to celebrate the race between 23rd and 26th August, with fun for children alongside the whale’s tail sculpture in the port and a number of concerts, visits on board a minesweeper, navigation simulators and gastronomic specials on offer.
The highlights of the programme at the “Ocean Live Park” (where admission is free of charge) include the following:
Saturday August 23
10.00: Opening of the Ocean Live Park.
10.00 to 14.00: Children’s activities at the whale’s tail sculpture.
20.00: A show celebrating the annual fiestas of the Carthagineses y Romanos (which take ploace in September).
22.00: Live music from AlViento: El Sitio de mi Garaje.
23.30: DJ music until 1.00.
Sunday August 24
10.00: Opening of the Ocean Live Park.
10.00 to 14.00: Children’s activities at the whale’s tail sculpture.
11.00 to 15.00: Sailing regattas in the harbour (Optimist and Lateen classes).
14.00: Paella for all.
18.30 to 20.30: Fan Day (posters, autographs, photos, etc).
20.00 to 21.30: Live music from the Steam Brass Band.
22.00: Live music from AlViento: Ruta Neón.
