Benidorm Town Hall has given the green light to a major 1.3 million euro environmental improvement project in the peri-urban Els Tolls neighbourhood.

The scheme to "renaturalise" the area is part of Benidorm's Strategy for Sustainable Urban Development and Integrated (EDUSI) aimed at, amongst other things, "continually renewing the Els Tolls urban space".

Benidorm Mayor, Toni Pérez, explained that "the EDUSI works to widen the pavement and renovate lighting are already underway and, together with this project, will make Els Tolls a greener, more comfortable, friendlier and more accessible neighbourhood for everyone".

The works will include the installation of tree wells and new tree plantations to generate more shaded areas, as well as the updating of rainwater and wastewater networks.

"By doing this we will continue improving the ecological footprint of Benidorm," explained the mayor, who added that "the project will enhance the comfort and wellbeing of our residents, especially the children, who will have more shaded areas on their school route".

The replacement and upgrading of the water networks will involve installing remote reading meters, extending rainwater collectors and creating a new irrigation network for the planting of new flowerbeds.

"We want to achieve a more efficient consumption of resources and move towards full sustainability. The renaturalisation of Els Tolls, together with the updating of the supply network, will allow us to reduce the impact we have on the environment by committing to efficiency and the green Benidorm that we have been planning for years," assured Pérez.

Half of the project is being financed with European ERDF funds - a small chunk of the 10 million euros Benidorm has secured to promote the EDUSI strategy for Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development.

EDUSI Benidorm is composed of a series of 13 thematic, specific, strategic and operational objectives whose social, environmental, economic and urban impact on the town aims "to transform and regenerate a delimited urban area and lead to an overall improvement of the municipality".
