A barrage of road traffic improvements have been carried out in Benidorm over recent months, from state-of-the-art pedestrian crossings to new access roads in the busiest neighbourhoods and major resurfacing projects.

A park-and-ride has been created to ease congestion in the centre of the resort, and to step up motorist and pedestrian safety, nine didactic speed controllers were installed across Benidorm 18 months ago, significantly reducing the average speed of vehicles through the town.

According to measurements taken by the Department of Mobility, traffic speed has fallen by 11.2 km/hr on average at the points where screens with emoticons and speed indicators have been placed, which represents an overall reduction of 28% since the devices were installed.

"This reduction in speed has been achieved not only by the installation of the controllers but also by the application of speed limits on the main roads that are even below the parameters set by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT)," said the Town Hall.

Of the nine points where controllers have been placed, only one, located in Avenida Armada Española, exceeds on average the limit set by the council and the DGT, which is 20 km/h; the average speed has fallen from 41 km/hr in January 2021 to 29 km/hr.

Councillor for Mobility, José Ramón González de Zárate, explained: "We have detected that the average speed is slightly higher than the speed limit and that is why we have decided to act in this particular area with a very important investment such as the implementation of the Low Emission Zone, which will begin in September.

"This will allow us to not only reduce speed, but also to significantly reduce CO2 emissions into the environment".

Didactic speed controllers have been installed in: Avenida del Mediterráneo, Avenida Comunidad Valenciana, Avenida Beniardá, Avenida Alfonso Puchades, Avenida Beniardá, Alfonso Puchades, Avenida de Villajoyosa, Avenida Juan Pablo II, and Avenida Armada Española.
