ARCHIVED - Benidorm switches off for Earth Hour 2023 to help combat climate change
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The Costa Blanca resort will join millions who will take part in WWF's 'The Biggest Hour for Earth' campaign on Saturday March 25
Once again the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Earth Hour is calling on individuals, communities, and businesses across the world to switch off their lights and "Give an Hour for Earth", spending 60 minutes doing something positive for the planet.
WWF is warning that the next seven years are crucial for halting irreversible nature loss and climate change.
And to show its support for greater action to combat global warming and biodiversity loss, Benidorm Town Hall will shut off non-essential lighting from 8.30pm until 9.30pm on Saturday March 25.
Councillor for the Environment, Monica Gomez, explained that "during those 60 minutes, the council will turn off the lights of some of Benidorm's most iconic and emblematic enclaves."
These include: El Tossal, El Castell, the facade of the Town Hall, the monument of the Cross of Serra Gelada, the ornamental lighting on Paseo de Poniente and the Paseo de Levante garland in the stretch between Avenida de Europa and Rincón de Loix.
"Benidorm is a benchmark municipality in sustainability, both in its conception and its management, promoting and implementing measures that promote the fight against climate change. In fact, we were pioneers in developing a Climate Change Action Plan, a document that has become a guide and roadmap when designing municipal actions and policies," he added.
In recent years, street lighting in the resort has been renovated and 'LED' technology implemented to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions as well as improve lighting conditions.
And the local authority is currently developing its Energy Efficiency project which has been awarded a grant of more than 3 million euros from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDEA) from European funds.
According to WWF data, 308 town councils in Spain have joined the 'Earth Hour' campaign - 41 of them in the Valencia Region - 57 organisations and 109 companies, including a hotel chain in the city.
In addition, 76 sports clubs have joined #KmForThePlanet.
Along with promoting the switching off of lights for an hour, this year WWF is also proposing the #KmPorElPlaneta initiative; a challenge that "uses the values of sport, such as effort and teamwork, to demonstrate that by adding up small gestures it is possible to win the most important race: overcoming the climate crisis".
Clubs, organisations and individuals have joined the initiative by running, walking, skating, swimming or cycling to complete the number of kilometres needed to circle the planet.
