Bus fare discounts in Marbella: Costa del Sol tourist town slashes cost of public transport

The town hall in Marbella, Malaga announced that it will take advantage of the aids put in place by the central government to improve efficiency and energy saving, which means that from September 1 until December 31, it will apply a 30% discount on public transport user passes.

The measure, designed to help cut the cost of living for locals who live in Marbella and tourists visiting the town, will reduce the cost of the monthly pass by ten euros, from 36.37 to 25.46 euros, and the cost of multi-journey tickets by 30 cents, from 0.83 to 0.58 euros.

“In order to facilitate this benefit for citizens, there will be no requirements, but it will be applied automatically once the next payment or top-up is made,” explained the Transport Delegate in Marbella, Enrique Rodríguez.

The aid from the central government in Spain is in addition to the Municipal Mobility Card, through which residents who are registered in Marbella and who are holders of the pass can use urban public transport free of charge.

The public transport travel card in Marbella was first announced days before the 2019 municipal elections and, since then, some 72,500 residents – in a municipality of some 150,000 registered residents – have been able to use the card.

Urban transport has been used by around 10,800,000 passengers since 2019 and more than 81% of journeys have been made free of charge, according to the city council.

In July, the number of users exceeded 586,000, which is 100,000 more than in the previous year and a year-on-year increase of 20%, showing that public buses are an increasingly popular and easy way to get around Marbella that is also environmentally friendly.
