Five Cartagena chiringuitos might not be allowed to open after March
All of the beach bars in Cartagena have just ten days to confirm to the City Council that they want to renew their licences for the next two years. The chiringuitos, as they are known in Spanish, have been awarded contracts for 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 but will still have to submit a request to renew their licences before January 31.If they fail to request a renewal, the council will assume the owners no longer want to run the beach bars and the tenders will be offered to someone else. The process isn’t as straight-forward for some beach bars though, and five chiringuitos face being permanently shut down in March after the Costas coastal authority filed a complaint last year. They claimed that these bars were “only opening in the afternoon and at night” when the beaches were busier, a clear violation of their contracts which state they must be open to beach users. The Costas argued that the managers of the chiringuitos were failing to provide a consistent service to beachgoers, preferring to draw clientele whose sole objective is to eat or drink at the bar.“It is a reality in which the clientele of these facilities is unrelated to the use of the beach, since they come to the place expressly to consume services that are in no way accessories to enjoying the beach, the obvious purpose of the seasonal services,” the complaint stated. The bars in question eventually agreed to open in the mornings to avoid closure but their future is still uncertain and they will have to wait for a final decision from the Costas on whether or not they can keep their licences for the next two years.Image: Archive
