Cartagena brings in the big guns to tackle mosquitoes
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
All public parks, gardens and residential streets in Cartagena will be sprayed against the pests throughout the summer
Mosquito populations are flourishing throughout the Region of Murcia following several muggy weeks with plenty of rain and warm temperatures, so Cartagena City Council is doubling down on its control measures with the help of specialist company Belmonte Ambiental.
Over the next few days, larviciding treatments will be stepped up in the city itself, along with coastal areas and residential neighbourhoods.
The extensive plan will actually occur in stages throughout the summer, as explained by Councillor for Health, Manuel Padín, beginning this week, and will tackle mosquito populations in most of the municipality. To reduce the impact on locals and to maximise efficiency, green areas will only be sprayed at night, between midnight and 8am. Even so, the council has asked residents to keep their windows and doors closed when the insecticide is being spread.
The calender detailing where and when will be sprayed will be communicated through Civil Protection notices in the coming days.
Larviciding treatments have also been reinforced in the natural spaces of the Marina del Carmolí, Lo Poyo and Calblanque and the Department of Health has contacted the ANSE Naturalist Association to ensure they tackle any mosquito problems on the land they own in the area around the Salinas de Marchamalo.
Complementary measures are also being carried out to clean gardens, public areas, boulevards and scrubland where these pests tend to breed.
As always, the City Council has published a series of recommendations for homeowners to cut down on mosquito populations:
Ensure there is no stagnant, standing water in containers, pots, vases or animal bowls.
Tightly cover anything that can’t be emptied, such as water tanks, cisterns and drums.
Cover vents with tight-fitting mosquito netting.
Remove any rubbish that can collect rainwater.
Apply bleach to gutters and drains to disinfect them.
Keep pools and ponds clean and properly chlorinated.
