ARCHIVED - Cartagena company devises plan to restore sense of taste and smell after Covid
The Murcia-based firm claims senses lost due to coronavirus can be recovered using aromatherapy
Loss of taste and smell is one of the least common symptoms of coronavirus, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), although almost half of infected patients have reported suffering from it.
In fact the Spanish Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery claims 53% of young, non-hospitalised patients in particular, have lost these vital senses during and after infection.
Now a company from Cartagena, Marnys Natural Quality, has devised a training plan designed to help these people recover the lost senses using aromatherapy.
Marnys RecuSenses plan, designed by medical specialists, is based on olfactory stimulation and recall through the inhalation of essential oilst.
"The idea arose after observing that a frequent side effect after infection by the Sars-Cov 2 virus, responsible for covid-19, was the loss of smell and/or taste. Olfactory impairment associated with covid-19 infection can occur in up to 85% of patients, and studies have shown that the use of aromatherapy has a positive effect on patients with anosmia and ageusia, shortening the recovery period.
"This is why we decided to create RecuSenses, a training plan for smell and taste, based on natural and essential aromas," explained Dr. Luis Gutiérrez Serantes, the specialist doctor who designed the olfactory and taste plan.
Olfactory training is a self-management strategy, which consists of a regular program of using strong smells or essential aromas to activate the memory of the olfactory system.
Aromatherapy can also be used in patients who have had loss of smell and/or taste resulting from viral infections such as influenza, but the diagnosis of the loss of these senses must always be made by a specialist doctor, to rule out tumours or neurological diseases, which require another type of treatment, warns Dr Serantes.
"Each patient requires a different recovery time, we cannot predict how much time elapses from the beginning of aromatherapy until the patient begins to feel improvement. What we do know is that the sooner aromatherapy is started, the better the results, shortening the recovery time of smell and taste," added the doctor.
The origin of olfactory training dates back to 1916, where a model called the 'odour prism' was developed by the German psychologist Hans Henning. And in 2009, Professor Thomas Hummel from the Smell and Taste Clinic at the University Dresden, Germany, designed a study where he investigated short-term repeated exposure to odours from essential oils over a period of 12 weeks, and their effect on the olfactory ability of individuals with anosmia.
The results were significant, with 30% of the essential oil subjects experiencing improvement in their olfactory ability. Recently, an analysis of 10 clinical studies of olfactory training, involving over 600 people, showed recovery rates of 30-60% of olfactory ability.
Another study showed that repeated exposure to odours can improve olfactory sensitivity as assessed by electroencephalograms and recordings of brain activity related to olfactory events.
The Marnys plan consists of a daily routine of two 10-minute sessions, morning and evening for several months, although the guidelines and duration may vary. A similar programme was already instated in an Andalucía hospital about a month ago.
