Cartagena invests in tourism with improvements to beaches and services

A technology-driven Observatory will pinpoint the needs of visitors to Cartagena this summer
Cartagena is one of the most popular destinations in the Mar Menor but the City Hall isn’t resting on its laurels and big plans are in place to improve the overall experience for holidaymakers even further. As well as making several of the city’s beaches more accessible, the council is introducing a cutting-edge monitoring system to keep track of the wants and needs of the municipality’s visitors.
Set to collect essential statistics from diverse public, private and municipal sources, this groundbreaking ‘Sustainable Tourism Observatory’ tool aims to collect accurate data on holidaymaker trends that will inform the development of the city and the coast in the future.
In this way, the Observatory “will provide an analysis system that will help municipal managers, companies and citizens make more agile and efficient decisions,” said the Councillor for Tourism, Beatriz Sánchez.
The City Council will create a digital portal with a private version so that municipal technicians can accurately monitor all variables related to tourism and a public version accessible to citizens.
“The project will also develop the influence of local tourism through a detailed study on the comprehensive sustainability of tourism, linked to the objectives of the Cartagena Urban Agenda and other strategic plans,” Sánchez pointed out, adding that “it will also include reports detailed information on the economic and social impact of tourist activity in Cartagena.”
Meanwhile, the council has invested 32,575.98 euros to improve accessibility for those with reduced mobility at San Ginés beach in La Azohía. One of the first jobs will be to move the disabled parking spaces much closer to the accessible bathing facilities, work which is due to get underway this week.
The footpaths next to the Civil Protection rescue hut will all be resurfaced to reduced the trip hazard, and additional parking spots for emergency vehicles will be created nearby. Here, the pavements will also be widened to facilitate wheelchair users.
Finally, a raised platform will be erected between the new car park and the assisted bathing section of the beach so people with reduced mobility can get to these services easily.
