The sixth wave of the Covid pandemic has led to an unprecedented explosion of infections due to the Omicron variant in the Valencia region, and Alicante province in particular.

The Ministry of Health has today reported 30,410 infections across the region in the last 24 hours, 10,894 of which have been recorded in Alicante.

In the last month-and-a-half, there have been almost 176,000 infections in Alicante province alone, which account for around 47% of the 375,400 cases diagnosed since the start of the pandemic.

The first case of Omicron in the province was detected in Elche on January 12, and it is already responsible for 80% of the infections.

And whilst the implementation of new measures to combat the rise in cases has been ruled out by the Valencian President, Ximo Puig, it was today confirmed that the Covid passport will remain in place until February 28.

Most autonomous communities are scrapping the mandatory use of coronavirus certificates to enter bars, restaurants and other spaces, but the Valencia region requested a second extension from the Superior Court of Justice when the current deadline expires on January 31.

The passport was introduced at the beginning of December, and though it "hasn't stopped the increase in the number of infections", Puig stressed that "it has encouraged many undecided people to get vaccinated":

In fact, 132,000 people have been immunised since the Covid passport was introduced, and the regional government plans to speed up third doses to over 18s with the reopening of mass vaccination centres from Monday January 31.

Puig also insists that despite the "substantial increase in infections caused by the Omicron variant in the last month", admissions to hospital wards are 2.5 times lower than a year ago and in intensive care units, there are three times fewer patients than in January 2021.

President of the Spanish Society of Preventive Medicine, Rafael Ortí, believes that "with the high level of infections that is currently taking place, the virus will increasingly lose strength because the population is adapting to it".

A breakdown of the latest health data shows:

Coronavirus cases

The regional Ministry of Health has reported 30,410 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, up from 18,561 on Wednesday January 26. This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,072,553.

By province: 4,130 have been recorded in Castellón (133,762 in total), 10,894 in Alicante (380,874) and 15,386 in Valencia (557,914). There are three unassigned cases.

According to the health data, there are currently 215,974 active cases, which represent 19.92% of the total positives.

Hospitalisations

There are currently 1,804 people admitted to hospital with Covid (56 less than on Wednesday), 191 of them in ICU (eight less): 250 in the province of Castellón, 22 in ICU; 586 in the province of Alicante, 63 of them in ICU; and 968 in the province of Valencia, 106 in ICU.

22,459 people have overcome the virus since the last update, which means the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic now stands at 859,527.

By provinces, the recoveries are distributed as follows: 101,831 in Castellón, 307,859 in Alicante and 449,780 in Valencia. There are 57 unassigned cases.

Fatalities

13 Covid-related deaths have been reported since Wednesday's update (26 less), which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 8,493: 968 in the province of Castellón, 3,260 in Alicante and 4,265 in Valencia.

The deceased, who died within the last seven days, are 10 men, aged between 531 and 83, and three women between 61 and 91-years-old.

Vaccination data

Once again, there has been no full update on vaccinations. As of Friday January 14, 4,265,413 people had been double-jabbed, and a total of 10,042,110 doses of vaccine had been administered since the beginning of the pandemic.
