ARCHIVED - Correos in chaos as parcels are delivered late all over Spain
Only a quarter of Spanish post office staff are working during the state of emergency
During the coronavirus lockdown and the state of emergency in Spain many people have become increasingly reliant on postal deliveries of packages to their homes, but unfortunately one of the consequences of the pandemic has been a severe decrease in the efficiency of Correos (the Spanish post office) and many parcels have been arriving late or not at all.
After the state of emergency was declared on 14th March Correos decided to provide only their “Servicio Postal Universal” service, limiting deliveries to letters and small packages. Deliveries of large items have been suspended for over a month, and this in turn has resulted in a loss of revenue and the inability of the Correos Express division (normally used only for urgent deliveries) to deal with all of the extra work it has suddenly taken over.
Trades unions explain that despite employees of Correos Express working double shifts and public holidays it is impossible to distribute all of the accumulated parcels on time, describing the situation as “unsustainable”.
At the same time it is reported that Correos’ contracts with large customers such as Amazon and Alibaba (AliExpress) are in serious jeopardy, with the companies threatening to break off business relations and maintain collaboration only in rural areas. The Amazon contract alone is worth 100 million euros a year to Correos, and as with countless other businesses in Spain, both large and small, the Covid-19 pandemic has made the future of the business even more uncertain than it has been in recent years.
During the state of emergency Correos has been operating with only 25 per cent of its 55,000-strong workforce active, and the parcels division has become the most important growth area of the business on account of the downturn in the number of letters sent over recent years. Last year the turnover of the division grew by 17 per cent, and during the lockdown, with online shopping one of the few sectors to benefit from the restrictions on movement, the number of parcels awaiting delivery has spiralled.
An indication of the problems facing Correos is that a bank loan of 47 million euros was requested in order to pay employees’ wages in March, and another will be needed for the April payroll bill. While the company urgently needs the de-escalation of the lockdown, though, at the same time they are aware that many delivery staff are in the “front line” of the pandemic and are reluctant to jump the gun: three staff are among the fatalities due to the virus, 1,000 more have tested positive and a further 3,000 are in isolation in their homes.
Online shoppers meanwhile, are increasingly taking to social media asking questions along the line of "is anybody else having problems with their parcel deliveries........????????".
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
