Councillor for Camposol gives an update on garden waste conundrum
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The piles of uncollected garden waste problem around the Camposol urbanisation is to be solved soon
The Camposol Business Association met with the Mazarrón Councillor for Camposol, Carmen Navarro on Friday March 1 and among the subjects discussed was the hot topic of garden waste. Councillor Navarro acknowledged that of communications received from Camposol, emails regarding this matter were more numerous than any other issue, adding that it was a problem that affected the whole municipality but a solution is in sight.
The problem is causing concern in the urbanisation and Camposol Today has also been contacted recently by 2 residents from A Sector, Mr James Tampin and another neighbour, who provided photographs, both asking if any light could be shed on the reason garden waste collections had ceased.
From a municipality-wide view point the garden waste problem has been an issue for many years for various reasons; collection transportation contract expiry, legal problems with the intended municipal site for disposal and also the latest glitch - historical difficulties at the main municipal vegetation waste disposal site at Pedreras Viejas (the old quarry) - which all but halted green waste collection as there was nowhere to deposit it after collection. This last obstacle has recently been overcome and the waste is to be managed in a more efficient way enabling the disposal process to resume.
However, with Mazarrón Council committed to recycling as much waste as possible, the mulching or composting of the waste vegetation became a problem as a new contract had to be put out to tender and awarded before the waste could be treated at the municipal recycling site after collection. The new contract should be signed in the very near future and it is expected that by the end of March all uncollected garden waste will have been collected for processing at the municipal recycling site and the new Camposol garden waste collection point on Sector C will be in operation.
The new collection point will also handle furniture, with more regular collections planned. The collection point will be open 3 days per week with a more regular collection service and will be manned, there will also be cameras positioned at the site to allow surveillance of any misuse of the facility.
