ARCHIVED - Councils increase disinfection as children prepare to go out for the first time in 6 weeks
Children CAN be infected by the coronavirus and transmit Covid-19 to adults
Image: Lorca council increasing disinfection in residential streets.
There is great relief in households all over Spain at the fact that this weekend, after six weeks of lockdown, children aged 14 or under are to be allowed out of their homes for an hour a day, but although it is now well—known that the effects of Covid-19 are generally far more dangerous in the elderly it should not be imagined that youngsters are in any way immune to the virus.
Of the 1,741 cases so far confirmed in the Region of Murcia 7 have been in infants under the age of 2, there have been a further 3 in 2- to 4-year-olds and 8 in 5- to 14-year-olds. That makes a total of 18 infections in the age group which will be allowed a certain amount of freedom as of Sunday, and of course, as many children who catch the virus are among those to present either very mild symptoms or none at all, there have probably been many more.
(Fortunately, no child has died of the infection in Murcia and only 4 have had to be admitted to hospital, including the 4-month-old baby infant who travelled from Madrid to Totana and was found to be infected as one of the first cases in the Region. None of the under-14s has required intensive care, although three of the 18 people aged between 15 and 29 to have tested positive have received such treatment.)
In addition, it should be remembered that although children are not generally affected so badly by Covid-19, they are potential carriers of the virus and as such a likely source of contagion in adults. This is precisely why schools remain closed and are likely to do so for some time, and why it has been stressed since the pandemic first reached Spain that youngsters should not visit their grandparents.
As ever, care and responsibility are of the utmost importance in exercising the right to take children out, accompanied by an adult, for an hour within a kilometre of the family home. Playgrounds must not be visited, facemasks should be worn if possible and children must be advised not to touch more things than necessary.
Schoolteachers are distributing information to their pupils informing them that the “bug” can lurk on slides, in rubbish bins and in any other conceivable hiding place, and that the return from their hour’s outing is the best time of day to have a bath or shower – advice which adults would also do well to heed!
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

Our local area groups are as follows. These are designed to filter locally specific information and may be used by clubs, charities, any of the businesses who work with us to ensure information is available to residents in English and for those living in the specific areas. They are not buy and sell groups, do not accept any bickering or argumentative so and so's, are not "open for any old rubbish" pages, and are not trying to compete with your local comunity groups, they are specifically for sharing good, relevant local information and we hope you will use them for that during this difficult time.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
