ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Hospital pressure in the Region of Murcia increases with 55 Covid patients admitted on Monday
Following several days in which Covid cases in the Region seemed to be beginning a downward trend, the latest update shows a new spike in daily cases. Pressure on the Region’s hospitals and health centres is also on the rise as staff struggle to cope with the high number of active cases.
The past 24 hours have seen an enormous jump from 2,397 new cases on Sunday to 7,291 on Monday January 17. The municipalities of Murcia and Cartagena both registered over 1,000 new cases, 2,210 and 1,015, respectively, while the remaining municipalities reported 500 or fewer.
Active cases
Although the number of new cases has increased drastically, active cases in the Region have actually decreased since the previous update; from 45,122 to 44,774.
Hospitalisations
There are 626 Covid patients in the Region’s hospitals (55 more in the past day), of whom 77 are in intensive care. There are also 44,148 people with Covid who are currently at home in self-isolation.
Fatalities
Four more victims have died due to the virus since the previous update, two men and two women aged 69, 81, 88 and 88. The total number of Covid-related deaths in the Region of Murcia since the start of the pandemic now stands at 1,904.
Recoveries
In the past 24 hours, 7,635 people have been given the all-clear from Covid; 222,894 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in the Region of Murcia has decreased by almost 1,000 since the last update and now stands at 5,096.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the official report released by MurciaSalud on January 18. However, this figure still places the Region well above the national average, which was 3,397.6 on January 17. Meanwhile, the 7-day rate has increased to 2,904.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Vaccines
As of January 18, 2,851,449 Covid vaccines have been administered in the Region, reaching 98.73% of the target population. However, only 85.84% of Murcianos have been double-jabbed and there are many residents who have yet to book their booster jab appointments.
