Deaths approach 100,000 in Spain but all other indicators are moving in the right direction
The week is coming to a close in Spain with more encouraging coronavirus data as the cumulative incidence rate has fallen below 1,000 cases for the first time since December 21, right before daily infections began to explode in the run-up to Christmas with the emergence of the Omicron variant.
The final step in the minds of many people would be scrapping face masks indoors, a measure that has been removed in many countries already. One renowned epidemiologist believes that while masks still have an important role to play in Spain, they could be a thing of the past by as early as April this year.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities have registered another 34,213 infections on Thursday February 17, 400 fewer cases than the previous day, bringing the total number of people infected with coronavirus since the start of the pandemic to 10,778,607.
Cumulative incidence rate
Following a drop of 76 points in the last 24 hours, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen to 984.33 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Andalucía is maintaining the best incidence record with just 473.75 cases, closely followed by the Canary Islands at 531.12 cases. While every community is making steady progress, Galicia has the highest rate (1,575.06 cases) and remains above the national average, followed by the Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community (1,327.74).
Young people aged between 12 and 19 have consistently scored the highest for the last number of days, with 1,451.45 cases per 100,000, while those between the ages of 60 and 69 now have the lowest rate, of 595.65 infections.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Today there are 10,251 patients admitted to hospital for Covid throughout Spain (down from 10,898 on Wednesday) while 1,351 people are being treated for more serious symptoms in the country’s ICUs (compared to 1,372 yesterday).
In the last 24 hours, there have been 907 admissions while 1,557 people have recovered from coronavirus and been discharged.
The number of beds occupied by Covid patients has dropped from 8.77% to 8.25% in the last 24 hours. Regarding intensive care, the occupancy rate now stands at 14.48%, down from 14.72% the previous day.
The overall death toll since the health crisis began has risen to 97,710 after a further 360 people lost their lives to Covid on February 17.
In the last week alone, a further 653 deaths have been reported, with Andalucía reporting the most fatalities, at 117.
As of February 17, a total of 38,396,333 people, representing 91% of the population, have received both doses of the coronavirus vaccine, while 92.8% have been administered the first dose.
