ARCHIVED - Covid patient numbers drop for the eighth week in a row: Spain pandemic update Feb 20
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Despite easing hospital pressure, the incidence rate among over 60s in Spain has taken another upswing
It might only be rising by degrees, but the incidence rate in people over the age of 60 continues to creep back up week by week, with more than 4,000 coronavirus infections diagnosed in the older age groups in the past seven days. On the other hand, the number of people hospitalised because of Covid has dropped for the eighth consecutive week although intensive care (ICU) admissions have increased ever so slightly.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered an additional 7,038 cases of coronavirus on Friday, a good decrease on the 8,387 infections reported on the same day last week. Of these, 4,354 positives were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,755,956.
Cumulative incidence rate
There’s been a very slight upswing in the 14-day cumulative rate, which has risen from 51.61 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 53.58. However, this is still one of the lowest figures of the entire pandemic.
In addition, the 7-day figure, standing at 25.79, is still more than 50% below the two-week rate, an excellent indication that the health situation remains relatively stable.
When it comes to autonomous communities, La Rioja this week has the lowest incidence rate of just 22.04 cases per 100,000, closely followed by Andalucia at 23.95.
Madrid is currently faring the worst, with 88 infections per 100,000 people while the Valencian Community is lower than the national average, with 47.50 cases, after dropping another six points in the last week.
Every region in Spain is now well below the 100-case mark.
The highest incidence continues to be recorded in people over the age of 80, with a rate of 102.78 cases this week, followed by those aged between 70 and 79 (48.42) and between 60 and 69 (32.31).
Fatalities and hospitalisations
A further 59 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in the last 7 days, bringing the total number of deaths in Spain up to 119,186.
The number of people hospitalised for Covid-19 in Spain has fallen for the eighth consecutive week.
There are currently 1,830 patients admitted to hospitals across Spain, compared to 1,880 last week, while 117 people are being treated in intensive care for more serious symptoms (up slightly from 111).
These figures mean that 1.46% of all hospital beds are occupied by people with a positive diagnosis, while the ICU occupancy rate is at 1.33%.
Vaccination data
As of February 20, 92.6% of the population over 12 (39,208,028 people) are double jabbed. In addition, 39,284,977 people over the age of 12, or 92.8% of the population, have received at least one dose.
