ARCHIVED - Covid rate drops in all regions and all ages: Spain update February 1
Spain is now close to 10 million infections since the coronavirus pandemic began
While the cumulative incidence rate in Spain has dropped once more and dipped below 3,000 infections for the first time since January 10, the country is on the brink of registering 10 million infections since the health crisis began. Incredibly, almost half of these cases have been registered since October 25, painting a really clear picture of the impact the Omicron variant has had on the evolution of the pandemic.
Monday January 31 also marked the two-year anniversary of the very first Covid case reported in Spain, that of a German who was staying in a hotel in La Gomera on the Canary Islands.
Cumulative incidence rate
After beginning its decline two weeks ago, the Ministry of Health reported on January 31 that the 14-day figure took another welcome nosedive over the weekend, dropping almost 200 points to 2,879 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Significantly, the incidence has gone down in every autonomous community in Spain and across all age groups, a very positive sign.
That being said, the rate still leaves Spain at a very high risk level, with Catalonia now occupying the top spot (5,112), followed by Aragon (4,510) and the Region of Murcia (4,173).
As has been the trend for several weeks now, Andalucía continues to report the lowest figures – just 1,020 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday, followed by the Canary Islands (1,422) and Madrid (1,581).
Although still well above the national average, the Community of Valencia has registered a significant drop, from 4,305 cases before the weekend to 4,015 this Monday.
By age, the least vaccinated group at the moment, those under 11 years of age, have the highest incidence (5,461) and the groups with the highest percentage of the population with booster doses maintain the lowest incidences: from 60 to 69 years of age (1,324), of 70 to 79 years old (1,336) and over 79 years old (1,778).
Coronavirus infections
The decline of the sixth wave becomes clearer with a look at the Covid infections registered over the weekend – 182,123 new cases were reported on Monday January 31 compared to the 305,432 infections the previous weekend.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,961,253.
Fatalities and hospitalisations
As has been predicted by the experts, Covid-related deaths and hospitalisations have yet to stabilise despite the other positive data, and another 259 people have lost their lives over the weekend. In the last seven days, 675 fatalities have been reported across Spain, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 93,225.
After several days of decline last week, hospital pressure has experienced a slight rebound also and the most worrying index continues to be ICU occupancy, remaining at a high risk level of 22.28%.
In at least 4 regions the pressure is even greater, exceeding 25% of ICU beds: Aragón (31.58%), the Balearic Islands (30.51%), Catalonia (40.97%) and Melilla (41.18 %).
Apart from the ICUs, there are currently 18,735 (18,393, on Friday) hospitalised Covid patients and in the last 24 hours there have been 1,857 admissions and 1,198 discharges. Those hospitalized for Covid occupy 15.05% (14.85%, on Friday) of the total beds.
Vaccination data
Since vaccination campaign began in Spain, 90,135,347 doses have already been administered and there are 38,289.39 people with the complete schedule, representing 90.8% of all those over the age of 12.
Almost 60% of younger children ages between 5 and 11 have by now received their first jab, while 91.64% of people older than 70 years have had the booster.
