ARCHIVED - Daily infections continue to plummet: Spain Covid update August 1
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The cumulative incidence rate of the over 60s age group in Spain has fallen a further 100 points
The long-enduring seventh wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which has coincided with the height of the summer season and an extreme rise in temperatures, is showing definite signs of decline. The latest report from the Ministry of Health in Spain, published on Friday July 31, showed almost 13,000 fewer Covid cases than three days previously. Furthermore, if the data from mid-July is taken into account, the slow-down is even more apparent, when three times as many infections were registered.
Although the BA.5 variant continues to predominate and represents more than 90% of infections, the health authorities are already beginning to pay attention to other new variants, such as one already under surveillance, which seems to have originated in India.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered 26,018 new cases of coronavirus on July 31, of which 14,764 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60. This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,226,579.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen more than 100 points since the last report to stand at 558.27 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 694.73 infections registered last Tuesday.
In the past two weeks, 26,796 positive infections have been registered in this age group.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 805.67 cases, followed by septuagenarians (543.44), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (382.24). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 274 cases to 217, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Andalusia continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate by far, a trend which it has maintained throughout the seventh wave (230.05 cases). Only one region now exceeds the 1,000-case threshold, Melilla, with 1,058 infections per 100,000 inhabitants.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 8,433 patients admitted for Covid throughout Spain (compared to 9,826 on Tuesday), while 460 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (down from 516).
With these figures, the number of beds occupied by coronavirus patients stands at 7.09% (compared to 8.23% on Tuesday) while it’s at 5.34% in ICUs (compared to 5.97% reported in the last report).
An additional 325 Covid-related fatalities have been registered since the last report, bringing the overall death toll to 110,719 people.
Vaccination data
As of August 1, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,130,245 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,251,854 have received at least one dose, 93.0% of the population over 12 years of age.
