Deaths are still on the rise in the Valencia region with 36 Covid-related fatalities in the last 24 hours.

In contrast, new cases have dropped significantly.

The week began with 19,000 infections over the weekend, a far cry from more than 57,000 on a Monday two weeks ago, and has followed a steady downward pattern with 8,985 new cases reported in the latest update from the Ministry of Health.

These sliding figures have seen the 14-day incidence rate in Alicante province fall to 2,667.61 - down 508 points in four days.

The areas of Elche, Alcoy and Elda continue to have the highest rates while the Marina Baixa and the Vega Baja are already below 2,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

There's no denying the highly contagious Omicron variant has changed the face of the pandemic, and in addition to the explosion of infections in the Valencia region since December, most patients are reporting hardly any symptoms of the disease at all.

Around 75% of infections are asymptomatic, according to data from the Carlos III Health Institute. compared to 50% a year ago. Moreover, 30% of those infected Omicron claim to have no idea where they may have contracted the disease.

The Institute stresses that proof of this high number of asymptomatic people can be found in hospitals, where up to 15% of patients eventually admitted with Covid visited the hospital with a different complaint or condition, and were found to be positive when they underwent a PCR test.

"There are many people, especially vaccinated people, who are so mildly ill that they don't think they have been infected," says Javier Blanquer, GP and vice-president of the Valencian Society of Family and Community Medicine, warning that "the biggest danger for asymptomatic patients is that they are not vaccinated."

A breakdown of the latest health data from the Ministry of Health shows:

Coronavirus cases

The regional Ministry of Health has reported 8,985 new Covid cases in the last 24 hours, down from 12,780 on Friday February 4, and 19,000 on Monday. This brings the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,179,138.

By province: 952 have been recorded in Castellón (148,848 in total), 3,239 in Alicante (426,178) and 4,794 in Valencia (632,092). There are five unassigned cases.

According to the health data, there are currently 136,524 active cases, which represent 11.20% of the total positives.

Hospitalisations

There are currently 1,649 people admitted to hospital with Covid, 149 of them in ICU (25 less in four days): 236 in the province of Castellón, 18 in ICU; 527 in the province of Alicante, 53 of them in ICU; and 886 in the province of Valencia, 78 in ICU.

25,473 people have overcome the virus since the last update, almost three times higher than the number of new infections, which means the total number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic now stands at 1,073,317.

By provinces, the recoveries are distributed as follows: 131,040 in Castellón, 382,704 in Alicante and 559,513 in Valencia. There are 60 unassigned cases.

Fatalities

36 Covid-related deaths have been reported since Monday's update, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis in the Valencia region to 8,723: 999 in the province of Castellón, 3,342 in Alicante (eight more than yesterday) and 4,382 in Valencia.

The deceased, who died within the last seven days, are 21 women, aged between 52 and 99, and 15 men between 67 and 94-years-old.
