ARCHIVED - Demolition of El Rollo tunnel in Murcia begins as part of AVE undergound works

According to central government, the AVE to Murcia's El Carmen station will arrive in December
Demolition of El Rollo tunnel on Avenida del Palmar in Murcia has begun as part of the works to bury the AVE high-speed train as construction of the underground section between the Carmen station and Barriomar continues at a good pace.
The AVE to Murcia's El Carmen looks set to arrive in December, according to the Spanish Government, following many setbacks, including opposing ideas about the project between the Junta de Hacendados and Adif and budget issues.
This second phase of the works on the AVE line between Murcia and Almería meant the closure of rail traffic between the Region and Madrid in March. A month earlier, the last surface train to the capital of the Region arrived at Murcia El Carmen station.
And in July, the BT laboratory train underwent a new phase of technical verifications, for which the 'Séneca' laboratory train is used, at several points along the route of the high-speed line that will connect Madrid with Beniel and from there to the entrance of Murcia del Carmen station.
The Beniel-Murcia del Carmen section, once in operation, will enable the direct high-speed connection from Murcia to Madrid and to the high-speed network.
It's part of the Mediterranean Corridor and will eventually facilitate the connection for passengers between Murcia, Lorca and Almería, as well as other cities within the Mediterranean arc; Madrid, the north of the peninsula and other destinations.
The El Rollo tunnel has been the backbone of traffic flow leaving Murcia towards the El Palmar road for decades, and its demolition will visually change the access to the El Carmen neighbourhood drastically. While the works continue, traffic will continue to circulate in the side lanes constructed for this very purpose.
Meanwhile, the next direct train from the capital will be in about two-and-a-half years, according to the calculations provided by the Administrator of Railway Infrastructures (ADIF), but it will arrive underground following the agreement endorsed by the Ministry of Transport, through ADIF and Renfe, with the regional government and Murcia City Council.
