Holy Week celebrations will be captured in a new app, 'Semana Santa de Cartagena Inmersiva'

From next year onwards, the best of Cartagena Easter Week will be available in virtual reality thanks to a new app.

Cartagena City Council is collaborating with the Integra Digital Foundation and the Junta de Cofradías de la Semana Santa de Cartagena to incorporate immersive technology into the annual celebrations.

The project 'Semana Santa de Cartagena Inmersiva' aims to generate a virtual reality application that will capture the most representative and outstanding moments of the different Easter processions.

Cartagena Mayor, Noelia Arroyo, explained the concept during a special presentation this week, accompanied by the Councillor for Economy and Finance, Luis Alberto Marin, and President of the Board of Brotherhoods, María Encarnación García.

"There will be 20 hours of recording over 10 days which will generate immersive audiovisual content through the use of a camera that allows the capture of 360 degree images, the generation of 8K videos at 60 frames per second, and, in short, capturing with great quality all the visual and sound of Easter Week," she said.

The recorded material will be subsequently processed and post-produced to extract at least 50 immersive audiovisuals that can be enjoyed using virtual reality glasses.

"This app may arouse the curiosity of new audiences, but it will also give us the opportunity to experience the processions in a different way to what we are used to," added the mayor.

The application will also include some options that will make it more accessible, such as selectors based on figures and not on colours, for people with colour blindness, and a simple operation by means of moving the head, designed for people with reduced mobility or with less skill in the use of virtual reality devices.

"In short, 'Semana Santa de Cartagena Inmersiva' is a project that aims to be representative of this important cultural and religious event in the Region of Murcia, allowing everyone to benefit from a powerful sensory experience," said the mayor.

The project is part of the Digital Literacy action line, which is managed and coordinated by the Regional Ministry of Economy, Finance, European Funds and Digital Administration, through the Integra Digital Foundation, and is financed by European ERDF funds.
