More than 5,000 runners from 50 countries are expected to take part in three races in Murcia next weekend
Murcia is putting the final touches to what is considered to be one of the city's most important sporting events, the TotalEnergies Murcia Costa Cálida Marathon, an event that is expected to attract more than 5,000 runners from 50 different countries.
Now part of the Spanish Marathon Masters Championship 2023, the marathon is organised by the Murcia Challenge Club in collaboration with the city council and the Region of Murcia's Athletics Federation.
The eagerly-awaited sporting event will consist of three races: a 26-mile marathon, a 13-mile race, and a 10km (6-mile) run.
The 10km race will start at 8.45am and the full and half marathons at 9.30am, all starting Avenida Teniente Flomesta and finishing in Plaza Cardenal Belluga.
There also complementary activities such as the Runner's Fair on February 3 and 4 in Avenida de la Marina Española, and a mini marathon on February 4, at 12 noon, in which 1,000 race-bibs will be given away to children who wish to take part.
More information and registration can be found on the maratonmurcia.com website.
During an official presentation of the event in Plaza Belluga on Friday January 27, Murcia Mayor, José Antonio Serrano, said: "The marathon is the ultimate running event and a demonstration of the capacity for self-improvement, hard work and commitment of sportsmen and women.
"It is a sporting event, but also a social, educational and tourist event that makes Murcia, our city, even greater, filling the streets of Murcia with colour, sport and health."
The Councillor Culture, Tourism and Sports, Pedro García Rex, also stressed the importance of the marathon on an international scale and locally.
"The event has a high national and international participation with the consequent benefit for Murcia's city's hospitality sector," he said, adding that it is one of 30 sporting events that take place in the city each year.
"Murcia offers a perfect weekend plan, both for runners and their companions, who can enjoy attractions such as the city's gastronomy and heritage."
