Click HereMay begins in Águilas, as in many other areas of Spain, with festivities linked to the Crosses of May and on the first weekend in May the outlying pedanía of Calabardina holds its annual fiestas of the fiesta del día de la Cruz in Calabardina.
On the second weekend in May the Romería del Rocío is usually held, honouring the Virgen del Rocío. After mass on Saturday the Romería heads out of Águilas town centre to the Molino El Saltaor, which lies several kilos from the town on the road to Lorca. Various activities are held on the campsite where the Romería pitches up for the night, with paellas, flamenco, musical Mass, horse and carriages, equestrian display and music late into the night. The word “Rocío” is generally associated with flamenco, sevillanas and the equestrian nature of the Andalucían Romanies where these associated activities are most in evidence.
During May the saint’s day of San Isidro, the patron saint of agricultural workers is celebrated, and in the outlying district of Los Arejos, where agriculture is the major source of employment, fiestas are held in his honour on the nearest weekend to the festivity.
There are also fiestas in the area of El Barranco de los Asensios in honour of the Virgen de Fátima ( these tend to fall around the 20th May).
These are very much local fiestas and take the form of dances on the Saturday evening, a Migas making competition on Sunday, giant paella, Mass, and then music and dance.
