ARCHIVED - First case of coronavirus in Puerto de Mazarrón: Mayor calls for calm
ARCHIVED ARTICLE Elements of the San José Fiestas have been cancelled to minimise the risk of contagion from coronavirus
The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, has called for calm after it was revealed that one of the new cases of Covid19 in the Región de Murcia relates to a 62 year old resident of the Puerto de Mazarrón.
At 11:20 on Wednesday morning it was confirmed that the total number of cases in the region had risen to 17, including the
two cases in Totana, one in Cartagena as well as this case in the Puerto de Mazarrón.
The Mayor has urged residents of the municipality to remain calm and follow the recommendations issued by the health authorities to minimise the risk of contagion.
One of the most important recommendations he said, is to avoid large gatherings of people, for which reason the council had taken the decision to postpone several of the events within the programme of the forthcoming Fiestas of San José.
Amongst these was the comida de convivencia de los Mayores, the meal shared by the elderly of the municipality with the fiestas de San José, as this age group is particularly vulnerable to the virus, as well as the loterías familiares prize draws run by the centros de mayores de Mazarrón(the day centres for the elderly in Mazarrón and the Port of Mazarrón) and the Club de Pensionistas de Mazarrón.
The cycling championships of the Máster Murcia de Ciclismo which was scheduled to take place on the 28th and 29th in Mazarrón has also been cancelled,
The Mayor also emphasised the need to follow the recommendations issued by the health authorities in order to minimise the risk of contagion and to remain informed via the official channels.
Obviously, information is only issued in Spanish by the regional authorities, so www.murciatoday.com is continuing to issue regular updates in English as the situation evolves.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus:
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
