ARCHIVED - Foreign visitors urged to go home as Spain closes hotels and other temporary accommodation
Spain promises to help those wishing to return home but stranded by flight cancellations
As Spain prepares to close down virtually all tourist accommodation as part of the coronavirus lockdown, the Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya has issued a plea for those temporarily visiting this country to leave for home as soon as possible.
“To the foreigners in Spain I would like to ask for your assistance and inform you that we are in contact with your authorities so that you can go home in an organised fashion”, says Sra González Laya, but although in the current situation it is beyond doubt that many non-Spaniards would love to go home the reality is that there are now very few flights left to enable them to do so. Airlines are finding that their scheduled routes are now impossible, unprofitable, undesirable or a combination of all three, and at a time of year when in normal circumstances they would be preparing to welcome in their summer flight timetables prior to Easter, instead they are gradually cancelling all services.
At the same time, Sra González Laya attempted to reassure Spaniards stranded abroad that every effort will be made to allow them to fly home. Since the start of the week over 20,000 callers have requested help from Spanish Embassies and Consulates around the world, and the intention is that although it may take a few days they will be enabled to return home. At present no plans have been finalized for specific repatriation flights in the hope that commercial routes will be able to cope with the demand, although it is already clear that in some countries such as Peru and the Philippines the situation is especially complicated.
Any repatriation campaign is extremely complicated, and in this case it caters for around 2.7 million Spaniards living abroad and another 65,000 who are registered as non-resident in other countries. On top of that a large number of Spanish tourists are at present in danger of being stranded all over the world.
Tourism closes down
Meanwhile, the government has decreed that all hotels, campsites, caravan parks and short-term tourist accommodation establishments are to be closed within a week, a measure which affects 12,559 registered establishments and over 162,000 employees across the country. By 26th March at the latest all such businesses are to close their doors to the public as soon as their last guests have left, although visitors who are booked in for long stays will be allowed to remain as long as they are not sharing facilities such as bathrooms or shower blocks with others.
Last year guests spent a total of over 343 million nights in hotels in Spain, more than 98 million of them accounted for by visitors from the UK and Germany, but in 2020, when the tourism sector will be severely affected by the coronavirus crisis all over the world, the figures are likely to bear little comparison.
Driving to the UK?
From Tuesday 17th March until the end of the State of Emergency, land borders are closed for entry to Spain, with the following exceptions: Spanish nationals, Spain residents, frontier workers and those able to prove that they need to enter for essential reasons.
The land borders remain open for those leaving Spain. British nationals can therefore still drive through France to return to the UK, but they will need to complete an ‘attestation’ (declaration) specifying the reason for being outside.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
