ARCHIVED - Guardia Civil report almost 1,500 coronavirus cases among officers
Police and Guardia officers are interacting in public every day in the course of their duties
It is quite right that there should be so much attention paid to the number of medical staff who have tested positive since the pandemic reached Spain, but of course doctors and nurses are not the only ones exposed to “front line action” on a daily basis and the members of the forces of law and order should not be forgotten.
By the end of last week a total of 1,483 members of the Guardia Civil had tested positive for Covid-19 (five of them in the Region of Murcia), and numerous others are in isolation as suspected possible cases due to their inevitably having been in close contact with those diagnosed. That such complete data are not available for the Policía Nacional or the local police forces in the 45 municipalities of Murcia is due at least in part to the lack of human resources available during the emergency, a problem which also affected the Guardia, according to AUGC-Murcia.
Rapid testing kits have been in use at the Murcia city headquarters of the Guardia Civil for the last week, and AUGC-Murcia (which represents the officers of the Region) is calling on them to be introduced far more widely, firstly for all officers presenting symptoms and then for those who have been in contact with officers who test positive. Eventually, it is envisaged that all officers should be tested.
The latest figures available show that the number of Policía Nacional officers to have tested positive for the coronavirus has reached 751, and in the local police forces across the country there are another 868 cases. In the regional police forces another 294 cases are reported.
However, these figures are almost certainly incomplete as for the last six weeks the men and women serving in the security forces have been out in public confronting lockdown breakers and interacting with members of the public in a way which most of the population has been obliged not to do.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

These are designed to filter locally specific information and may be used by clubs, charities, any of the businesses who work with us to ensure information is available to residents in English and for those living in the specific areas. They are not buy and sell groups, do not accept any bickering or argumentative so and so's, are not "open for any old rubbish" pages, and are not trying to compete with your local comunity groups, they are specifically for sharing good, relevant local information and we hope you will use them for that during this difficult time.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
