ARCHIVED - Guardia increase patrols around isolated properties but owners are warned to take care
Readers have already reported suspicious activity around isolated properties

The enforced lockdown of Spain has provided a golden opportunity for the less unscrupulous members of society to take advantage of the absence of property homeowners to avail themselves of the possessions of other people.
Although crime in general is reported by the police to have fallen by more than half since the lockdown began, other types of crime are on the increase, notably cibercrime, internet frauds and domestic violence.
This week the police expressed their concern that isolate campo homes would be targeted by thieves, as although police and the army are out on the streets enforcing lockdown, the Region of Murcia covers over 11,000 square kilometres and many properties in rural areas are impossible to patrol, taking into consideration that the majority of the population live in urban towns and cities.
Holiday properties will be particularly vulnerable, especially those known by local criminals to be empty at the moment.
The Guardia Civíl has begun patrols in rural areas and is attempting to maintain contact with residents who live in isolated properties or properties in outlying areas of urban towns although already there have been reports of unsettling incidents, some of them amongst our own community.
One local lady reported on social media this week; ". Around 10.30pm, during the heavy rain, our gate buzzer was pushed. I asked on the intercom who was there. A man spoke in Spanish to which I said I didn’t understand. He immediately changed to English and asked if we had paper for his cigarette ?? My husband went outside and he again asked him for paper for a cigarette. He said no and the man walked away towards the rubbish cart and put in a bag. ( whether he had rubbish or was just carrying a bag to justify his being out?) All very strange and made us concerned that maybe he was just seeing if anyone lived in the villa.
He was in his 30’s, blonde collar length hair."
There have been several other postings of this nature reporting strange behaviour and the same is being reported on some urbanisations, particularly those with no entry gates.
It's always advisable to ensure that there are visible signs of someone living in the house, but it's important to take particular care at night and think twice about opening the front door and going outside should you suspect that there is someone in the garden or "checking out" your home.
Make noise, put on lights, open an upper floor window and make your presence visible, visibly make a call, or simulate a call as though you're calling the police but be very careful about creating any opportunities for any physical contact.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

Our local area groups are as follows. These are designed to filter locally specific information and may be used by clubs, charities, any of the businesses who work with us to ensure information is available to residents in English and for those living in the specific areas. They are not buy and sell groups, do not accept any bickering or argumentative so and so's, are not "open for any old rubbish" pages, and are not trying to compete with your local comunity groups, they are specifically for sharing good, relevant local information and we hope you will use them for that during this difficult time.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
