ARCHIVED - Harsh penalties promised after nearly 3,000 protest in Madrid against masks and Covid
The government delegate in Madrid has promised “harsh penalties” for the organisers and those who attended without wearing facemasks
"Wake up" the banners proclaimed " you're being controlled through fear" and "the media is manipulating you".
Although most of us aren´t particularly happy about having to wear facemasks in 30 degrees of heat and undoubtedly, many businesses in Spain are suffering the effects of the Covid lockdowns and restrictions, there is a general acceptance that with case numbers continuing to climb that an attitude of civil responsibility is required to try and limit the spread of Covid-19 and prevent un-necessary deaths.
There are of course, many conspiracy theories circulating on social media and certainly some extremely vocal individuals who continue to insist that the whole epidemic is nothing more than a figment of the imagination of the media; a plot to manipulate society; that Covid is nothing more than a mild flu and more people die from common flu than because of covid and some insist that the wearing of masks is nothing more than a cunning plot hatched by the Chinese to boost export sales.
Some of the dissenters are so sure that Covid is not as dangerous as “the media and government want the public to believe” that they are happy to gather together in large numbers, without masks or social distancing to prove their point and on Sunday an estimated 2500-3000 protestors gathered in Madrid to protest against the imposition of masks and the measures put in place to combat the spread of Covid -19.
The protest was organised via social networks, and created a significant amount of comment before it even took place, the singer Miguel Bosé posting several videos giving his support and calling on people to go to the Plaza de Colón on Sunday and protest, although he himself failed to attend as he is currently living abroad following a discussion with the tax authorities about tax liabilities, a stance which has drawn severe criticism from fellow artists who are also suffering the effects of the crisis and have been forced to cancel summer tours and concerts.

The Government delegate to Madrid, José Manuel Franco, took the decision to allow the protest to go ahead, as the organisers had guaranteed that social distancing would be observed and had stated in a letter sent before the demonstration that there would be people reminding attendees to observe social distancing with banners.
However, the majority of attendees blatantly ignored both social distancing and the requirement to wear masks in public areas, packing together to chant slogans and wave placards proclaiming their point of view.
Many of those attending denied that covid even exists, and protested that the measures only serve to limit the freedoms of citizens.
They accused the Government of "violating human rights", because "healthy people should not wear masks, "which they consider to be " real torture. "
Environmental writer and politician Esteban Cabal, said, "The SARS-CoV-2 virus has not yet been isolated and purified. There is no scientific evidence to declare the pandemic and to affirm that this virus is pathogenic. They are also diagnosing people who are not sick as sick, because they are based on some PCR tests that are nonspecific and are not a diagnostic test.”
Many others carried banners proclaiming slogans such as: "the system controls through fear and the press manipulates"; "Covid does have a cure but it is prohibited, they do not want to protect you" or another in English that said "born to be free (born to be free)".
There was also criticism of the other measures recently implemented by the Ministry of Health to curb the outbreaks throughout Spain, with banners bearing messages such as: "I am part of the more than 200,000 workers who pay their bills working in the leisure sector at night" or "artists also have to eat. "
The government delegate said that those who breached the law and “ endangered the health of Madrid," would be punished "with the utmost severity".
Although accepting the fundamental right to demonstrate the "appropriate measures" would be taken against the protestors who broke the law.
He explained in an interview with the Cadena Ser radio station that the protest had not been broken up as it was considered that as the protestors were not violent " it would have been worse to dissolve it or initiate a police charge.”
Franco insisted that "it is unacceptable and extremely serious" what happened in the rally yesterday and that “action will be taken accordingly.”
Other social media users expressed their disgust about the rally:
