ARCHIVED - Health experts warn of Covid rebound: Spain pandemic update October 10
Several of the coronavirus indicators have increased in Spain this week although hospital numbers have dropped
The director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, has responded to the slight upswing in the pandemic data this week, warning that Spain could “very likely” see “a rebound” in Covid infections in the coming weeks. This is primarily due to the fact that respiratory illnesses are also now entering their “preferred season.”
However, the director has stressed that a very high vaccination rate will hopefully mean that an uptick in Covid cases won’t translate into more hospitalisations.
“At this time we cannot yet assess whether the situation will be better or worse. We have to see how the different variants that are constantly emerging are distributed, and from there make decisions on how to deal with the pandemic,” he concluded.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has reported 10,843 new coronavirus cases on Friday October 7, a very slight increase on the 10,721 infections registered on the same day the previous week. Of these, 6,829 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
In the past two weeks, a total of 20,745 positives have been registered in this age group.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,441,941.
Cumulative incidence rate
Most worrying is the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60. After jumping six points to land at 155.50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last update, on Friday the figure had risen another 13 notches to stand at 168.41.
The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over has also experienced another increase, rising from 78.49 cases to 86.32.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 236.20 cases, followed by septuagenarians (187.52), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (119.24). All of these age groups have, unfortunately, noted an increase since the last report.
Looking at the incidence by autonomous community, the enclave of Ceuta continues to have the best figures, standing at 59.30 cases this week.
It’s followed by Andalucia, with an incidence rate of 76.63.
The Valencian Community is hovering right around the national average, with an incidence rate of 161.04 cases per 100,000.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Despite the increase in infections, hospital occupancy remains stable and there has been a notable dip in admissions in recent days. There are currently 2,716 patients hospitalised and positive for Covid throughout Spain (2,501 on Tuesday) while 129 patients are being treated in the ICU (141 on Tuesday).
This means that 2.22% of all hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients while intensive care occupation has dropped from 1.63% on Tuesday to 1.48% today.
The most important thing to note is that of all the general hospital admissions, only 48.4% of them have been hospitalised as a direct result of coronavirus (as opposed to those who have tested positive since being admitted). The figure is very similar in the ICU (48.8%).
A further 206 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Friday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 114,468 people.
Vaccination data
As of October 10, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,156,977 people have now received two doses.
In addition, 39,268,068 people (93.1%) have had at least one dose.
