article_detailDate Published: 12/06/2024Heavy rainfall dumps 31 litres in one hour in Cartagena this Wednesday
The storm warning is in place all day today in the Region of Murcia
The continuing storms, which are set to abate from this Thursday June 13 onwards, have caused more disruptions to traffic and floods in buildings this Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12.For the Campo de Cartagena, Mar Menor and Mazarrón area, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has raised the alert level from yellow to orange, warning of the possibility of up to 30 litres of accumulated rainfall per hour. The rest of the Region is on yellow alert, and all of these will remain active until midnight.Indeed, according to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), 31 litres of rainwater per square metre have already been recorded in Cartagena city in just one hour this morning.🌧️Llueve con intensidad en #Cartagena

🟡Toda la Región está en aviso amarillo por tormentas y lluvias de 25l/m2 en una hora hasta la media nochehttps://t.co/VHV784pxd1 pic.twitter.com/FRCo9MsVfWThe intensity of the rains caused the plenary session of the Regional Assembly, which was scheduled to begin at 10am with an appearance of the Minister of Agriculture, Sara Rubira, to be delayed. The delay was due to leaks caused by rain inside the building.Other areas of the Region have also experienced more heavy rains, flooding and fallen trees – including in Lorca, Calasparra and Las Torres de Cotillas – prompting emergency workers to be sent out to help.[RESUMEN INTERVENCIÓN]

As well as the Guardia Civil police, Huermur has asked the CHS and the City Council of Murcia to investigate. The conservation organisation say they are disappointed about the lack of action over “these recurrent episodes of white foam in the river every time it rains” and the “poor quality” of the river, for which they have received no “credible” answers. As such, they say they are considering resorting to other channels at national or European level to raise awareness about this situation. The forecast for this Thursday is for improving conditions and there will be no active warnings for adverse meteorological phenomena. There will still be wet patches, but it will be weaker and more scattered, fizzling out as we approach the weekend.>>> Follow our Murcia Weather Watch Facebook group for more weather updates or see our Weather & Climate page <<<Image 1: CEISImage 2: AemetImage 3: Huermur
