After the record figure on Friday January 8 (5,558 cases in 24 hours), the number of new cases reported on January 8 (3,620) was the highest figure reported on a Saturday since the pandemic began.
These two high figures, added to the over 2,000 on Sunday January 9, have resulted in the incidence rate in the Region shooting up to 3,167.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past two weeks.
The update released on Monday January 10 reported that 2,294 cases were registered on Sunday; a particularly figure for a Sunday when fewer Covid tests are usually carried out. These new positives bring the total number of active cases in the Region to 29,188.
Hospitalisations
Though the primary care sector has been under severe pressure over the past few weeks with an increased demand for PCR and antigen tests, hospitals have been managing to evade the pressure experienced in past Covid waves. There are currently 421 patients in hospital with Covid-19, of whom 93 are in intensive care, 15 more than on Friday January 7.
Fatalities
Although the number of deaths remains lower than during other waves, there have still unfortunately been ten deaths since Thursday’s update: two on Friday, two on Saturday and six on Sunday. This leaves the total death toll at 1,869.
Incidence rate
Both the 7- and 14-day cumulative incidence rates have risen since the previous update and the 7-day rate now stands at 1,953.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 1,477.4 on Friday. Meanwhile the two-week rate has risen to new heights and now stands at 3,167.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 2,609.9 on Friday.
Vaccines
Over 2.7 million vaccines have been administered in the Region of Murcia so far, with a total of 96.57% of the population having had at least one dose of a Covid vaccine. Boosters are now being offered to residents over the age of 45 and appointments for first and third jabs can be booked online.
