ARCHIVED - Highest number of fatalities since March: Spain Covid update January 26
All Covid indicators with the exception of fatalities have declined in Spain in the last 24 hours
According to the Ministry of Health in Spain, all Covid indicators with the exception of the number of fatalities have decreased in the past 24 hours, a very positive sign that the sixth wave of the pandemic is coming to an end.
However, while the cumulative incidence rate has experienced another impressive drop on Tuesday January 26, it’s important that note that this figure did in fact fall for three consecutive days last week before rebounding on Friday to reach the highest level of the entire pandemic, indicating that the evolution of the health crisis is far from guaranteed.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health of 114,877 new coronavirus infections on January 26, 61,669 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours, a significant increase on the 27,248 cases reported on Monday.
This figure brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 9,395, 767.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day rate has fallen again on Tuesday for a second consecutive day. This vital indicator has plummeted 113 points in the last 24 hours to stand at 3,267 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
While undoubtedly improving, this number keeps Spain in the very high risk category, but the rate has dropped everywhere except Cantabria (4,305), the Valencian Community (4,173) and Asturias (3,903).
Ceuta maintains its lead with 5,972 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Catalonia (5,141) and the Region of Murcia (5,093). Andalucía holds onto the coveted bottom spot with just 1,284 cases.
Children under the age of 11 continue to have the highest cumulative incidence rate of all the populations, with 5,354 cases.
Hospitalisations
Hospital pressure has thankfully dropped compared to Monday, but the figure continues to be worrying, particularly with regard to the ICU, which remains in the high risk category as 23.28% of beds are occupied by Covid patients.
Catalonia, which has sat at the very high level for weeks, is almost double the national average with 42.9% bed occupancy. Eight other regions are also at extreme risk: Aragón (33.77%), the Balearic Islands (28.40%), Castilla y León (27.96%), the Valencian Community (25.43%), Madrid (27.05 %), Melilla (35.29%), Navarra (25.4%) and the Basque Country (26.48%).
In addition, there are currently 19,314 hospitalized Covid patients (303 fewer than on Monday) and in the last 24 hours there have been 2,181 admissions and 2,569 discharges. Those hospitalized for Covid occupy 15.47% of the total beds.
Fatalities
The most negative data to be revealed on Tuesday is the 382 Covid-related deaths, a figure that hasn’t been experienced since March 2021. The Ministry of Health has clarified that this tragic increase is due in part to a delay in the notification of deaths from one autonomous community, which has raised the statistics for the past several days, and not just the past 24 hours.
In the last seven days, 702 people have died in Spain, which brings the total number of fatalities since the health crisis began to 92,376.
Vaccination data
Since the vaccination campaign began in Spain, 88,984,997 doses of the vaccination have been administered and there are currently 38,253,646 people with the full schedule – 90.7% of the population over the age of 12. In addition, 39,070,113 people, representing 92.6% of adults, have received their first dose.
By now, 53.4% of children aged between five and 11 have already received their first jab while 91.19% of the population over the age of 70 have also had their booster vaccine. Among those between 60 and 60, 88.47% of people have received the first dose, a figure which falls slightly to 67.19% for those in the 50 to 59 age group.
