Historical Memory groups in the Region of Murcia demand the removal of 200 Franco symbols

The Federation of Historical Memory Associations of the Region of Murcia (La Federación de Asociaciones de Memoria Histórica de la Región de Murcia) has renewed its appeal to the government to remove the hundreds of monumental vestiges of the Franco regime from public buildings and streets throughout the community.

Between November 2022 and January 2023, the activists submitted a list to the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory of 200 plaques, inscriptions and monoliths dedicated to Francoism that still exist in the Region. If the state fails to remove these from the streets, town halls, the Bishopric of the Diocese of Cartagena, the Fuertes Group and the Ministry of Education, the Federation has now asked for permission to act ex officio in these areas.

All of these memorials pay homage "to a dictatorial and criminal regime, so that the dignity of many citizens will continue to be affected as long as they are not removed," a group spokesperson stressed.

Earlier this year, the Federation of Historical Memory Associations of the Region demanded that the municipalities comply with an October 19 law that stipulated all Francoist vestiges be removed, "which should not be in any public building nor in those privately owned but with public visibility that flaunt anti-democratic values, and that are absolutely intolerable for a society that claims and claims to be democratic."

Despite the ruling, forty-seven years after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco, hundreds of these dedications remain throughout the Region.

The Federation brings together several like-minded groups and is dedicated to promoting "initiatives so that the names and monuments of those who incited, participated, defended or profited from the 1936 uprising, the Spanish civil war of 1936/1939, the following Francoist repression and the democratic transition disappear from public roads and their honours, awards and recognitions are annulled."
