ARCHIVED - Horseback coronavirus lockdown breaker faces a fine in La Unión
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The rider explained that he was riding the horse to decide whether he wanted to buy it
Two residents of the area around La Unión face fines after one of them was caught during the coronavirus lockdown riding a horse in the outlying area of Roche, close to the outskirts of the city of Cartagena.
The rider explained to officers of the Guardia Civil when he was detained that he was in the process of deciding whether to buy the horse, and was anxious to ride it before making his decision, but both he and the owner of the animal are deemed to have been in breach of the restrictions on movement imposed during the national state of emergency. Specifically, this reason for being out in public is not one of those specified as being “essential”, and therefore the lockdown rules were not being obeyed: the rider was even asked whether he was on his way to a dispensing chemist’s or to buy essential supplies, but continued to explain that he was simply riding after the owner lent him the animal.
It was soon confirmed that the horse was registered as belonging to a resident of the nearby village of Alumbres, and both men now face fines.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
