ARCHIVED - Hospital admissions increase by 23 per cent: Spain Covid update June 29
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Hospitalisations have increased in the last week in all but two regions of Spain
The coronavirus pandemic is stepping up another gear across Europe, with the French government even considering reintroducing a number of anti-Covid security measures such as masks on public transport due to rising infections. And while the experts in Spain debate whether or not the seventh wave has peaked, there can be no escaping the fact that the data is only moving one way: up.
So precarious has the situation become in Barcelona that the Catalonia government spokesperson has this week asked to exercise extreme caution and to “use the mask indoors again.”
Hospitalisations and fatalities
The number of people hospitalised for coronavirus in Spain has grown by 22.58% during the last week, with increases in all autonomous communities except for the Canary Islands and Cantabria. There has also been a significant rise of 19.9% in Covid patients in intensive care.
The Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday June 28 that there are currently 9,553 people hospitalised, 1,760 more than on the same day last week, while 433 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs, an increase of 72.
These figures mean that 7.79% of all hospital beds are being used by coronavirus patients (up from 6.35% a week ago) while the occupancy rate of ICU beds has increased to 4.93% from 4.07%.
Sadly, 107 more people have lost their lives to Covid, which brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 107,906.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities have registered an additional 52,218 Covid cases this Tuesday of which 28,758 have been diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic in Spain to 12,734,038.
Cumulative incidence rate
The incidence in people over 60 years of age has increased by 86 points in the last week, with the 14-day figure now standing at 841.27 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 755.71 last Tuesday.
In the past two weeks, a total of 103,628 positives have been registered in this age group.
Vaccination data
Since the last update, a total of 39,099,907, representing 92.7% of the population over the age of 12, are double jabbed while 39,240,619 people, or 93%, have by now received at least one vaccination.
