ARCHIVED - Hospital pressure continues to drop: Spain Covid update February 9
Intensive care admissions steadily move out of the red zone across Spain
With the daily coronavirus data steadily improving across Spain, several changes are afoot as the sixth wave beats a hasty retreat. The vast majority of autonomous communities have scrapped the Covid passport given the prevalence of the less serious Omicron variant and from tomorrow, masks will no longer be mandatory outdoors.
With this in mind, the Spanish government is trying to have a final push for vaccinations, urging parents of children under the age of 11 to immunise their youngsters; the uptake of the Covid jab in this age group has been thus far disappointing, which is a cause for concern considering they maintain the highest incidence rate.
In addition, the Public Health Commission has now recommended the use of the German Novavax vaccine for people who have opted not to be inoculated because they are allergic to the other jabs.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day rate continues its downward trend and has dropped a further 104 points in the last 24 hours, standing at 1,893 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Tuesday February 8.
While this vital indicator has fallen across all regions, it remains above 1,000 cases in eight communities and only Andalucía (638) and the Canary Islands (746) have brought the number below 1,000.
Catalonia, which has had the highest figure in most of the indicators for several days now, has not provided updated data due to technical issues.
The lowest incidence rate is seen in older people aged between 60 and 69, at just 953 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom have by now been tripled jabbed.
Coronavirus infections
The total number of Covid cases in Spain has risen to 10,439,302 after a further 48,831 infections were reported on Tuesday.
In the past two weeks, a total of 897,165 positives have been registered.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
The most impressive improvement in the past day can be seen in hospital pressure after a significant 785 people were discharged, bringing the overall occupancy rate down to 12.2% (12.83% yesterday). There are currently 1,768 people being treated for more serious cases in the ICU (70 fewer), meaning that Covid patients now take up 18.7% of intensive care beds (down from 19.56% on Tuesday).
Catalonia continues to be the community with the highest occupancy in its intensive care units, where 35.5% of the beds are occupied by Covid-19 patients, followed by Aragón, with 28.5%. Only Galicia and Asturias are below 10% occupancy in the ICU, with 4.4% and 9.9%, respectively.
A further 361 fatalities were registered on Tuesday compared to 408 on the same day last week, bringing the overall death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 94,931.
In the last seven days, 762 people with a confirmed positive have lost their lives in Spain.
Vaccination data
Some 38,351,440 people (90.9% of the total population of Spain) have now received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine, while 22,764,113 of those have also had their booster jab.
As of February 8, 77% of those over 40 years of age have been injected with the extra dose, while from 30 to 39 this figure drops to 35% and from 20 to 29 to 22%.
55.6 % of children between 5 and 11 years old (1,829,428) already have their first inoculation.
In Spain there are just over 3 million citizens who have decided not to be vaccinated (the majority between 20 and 39 years old), a figure that has barely changed for weeks.
Omicron
Of the 12 coronavirus variants detected across the globe since the health crisis began, Omicron has categorically prevailed and has swept through Spain at a remarkable speed in just seven weeks.
According to the Ministry of Health, 99% of all the Covid cases sequenced between January 17 and 23 were of the Omicron strain.
