ARCHIVED - Hospitalisations drop below 3,000: Spain Covid update September 7
Intensive care admissions have rebound slightly but daily infections in Spain continue to drop
Spain is entering its first autumn almost without restrictions since the coronavirus pandemic began at the end of 2019 and the bi-weekly figures continue to reflect a remission in the health crisis. Hospitalisations this week have dropped below the 3,000-patient barrier and after stagnating for a few days, the incidence rate has also fallen slightly.
Following news that some 10 million doses of vaccines designed to tackle the Omicron strains of coronavirus should be arriving in Spain in the coming days, the health authorities are confident that the country is facing a relatively positive winter season.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered 6,703 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday September 6, of which 3,992 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60, a big drop on the 9,489 infections notified in Friday’s report.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,358,722.
This downward trend has thankfully continued for several weeks now: in total, the Ministry of Health has reported 8,500 cases in the last 7 days throughout Spain, a far cry from the more than 50,000 infections reported in each report during the greatest impact of the seventh wave in mid-July.
Cumulative incidence rate
After failing to budge last week, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has dipped to 149.03 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which represents a slight decrease compared to the 153.87 reported on Friday.
The 7-day incidence in citizens aged 60 or over has remained stable at 69 cases.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 215.00 cases, followed by septuagenarians (152.83), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (97.39). All of these age groups have experienced a decline over the weekend.
Aragón continues to have the lowest incidence rate in Spain this week, with just 69.15 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Andalucia (86.56) and Ceuta (92.25).
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 2,889 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain (a drop of 134).
The negative data of the day comes from the ICU, which has increased slightly compared to Friday, going from 210 to 224. In percentage terms, the occupation of beds in the Intensive Care Units has increased from 2.46% to 2.74%.
By autonomous community, the Canary Islands has the highest number of beds occupied by Covid patients, with 3.91% compared to the 2.52% national average. It is followed by Cantabria (3.38%), Castilla y León (3.17%) and Madrid (3.15%).
In the case of those admitted to the ICU, the Basque Country is the most affected region, with 7.08%.
In the worst moments of the health crisis, more than 20% of intensive care beds were filled with Covid patients, with more than 2,000 patients being treated.
A further 107 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Friday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 112,804 people.
Vaccination data
As of September 7, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,145,640 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,259,194 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
