People are now travelling for free in exchange for taking care of pets
The answer has now arrived in Málaga for pet owners, who have up to now had little options as to what to do with their beloved pets when they are away.
House sitting, also known as ‘Airbnb for pets’, has become very popular in recent years, and now is taking over Spain.
With pet lovers now travelling free of cost to look after beloved pets in their own home, the answer for what to do with your pets when you are away might just be ‘house sitting’.
In short, ‘house sitting’ is when a person takes care of pets and a house, while the owner is away, free of charge. This new method of travelling seemingly benefits both parties involved.
How it works
There are several apps to use for getting in touch with someone to house sit. One such app is Trusted House Sitters. The platform offers the largest number of houses in different places around the world, and has long been a trusted and well reviewed company.
In Málaga alone there are a total of 228 dog, cat and pet sitters registered on the site. From this, pet owners can choose their favourite sitter based on the profiles and description provided.
Owners of pets can also place advertisements for the specific job they are offering. Certain jobs are easier than others. Certain owners have just one pet, while others like Claudia in Málaga owns two dogs, eight cats, fish and freshwater turtles.
In exchange for looking after Claudia’s pets, the sitter gets to enjoy her family home with 4,000 square metres of garden, a swimming pool, and two ponds, in the foothills of Estepona.
Many of the advertisers in Málaga are British, Dutch or German and have been living in the Costa del Sol for years.
How to become a ‘pet sitter’
If you wish to become a house and pet sitter, the most effective way would be to go through the relative platforms, such as Trusted House Sitters.
By registering and paying an annual subscriptions you will be able to receive notification about houses that suit your preferences.
Furthermore, If you are new to the platform and the world of house sitting, you can request three houses for free before paying a fee.
The annual fee for both sitters and owners is 89 euros.
Those that wish to try house and pet sitting should know that it is not a paid job, but rather an exchange.
