Hospital and intensive care occupancy rates in Spain have shown improvement over the last week

Although the incidence rate appears to have plateaued in Spain in recent days, hospital and ICU admissions have continued to fall, leading the government to approve its new strategy against Covid after several delays.

The Public Health Commission agreed to implement the new system on Monday March 28, whereby people with mild or no coronavirus symptoms will no longer be required to quarantine and the health authorities will focus their efforts on more serious cases. In addition, it will continue to closely monitor Covid infections in people over the age of 60, those with prior conditions and pregnant women.

Cumulative incidence rate

The 14-day incidence rate stands at 436.54 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Tuesday March 22, a slight decrease on the 445.80 cases reported in the last update on Friday.

This figure experienced a minor rebound last Tuesday but it has subsided again; however, the progression has definitely flattened over the last couple of weeks and Spain seems unable to break through the 429 case barrier.

This situation becomes clearer when we consider that, between February 1 and March 1, the incidence rate fell by almost 2,200 points to 515 cases.

The age groups that maintain a higher average incidence are those between 12 and 19 years old (542.22) and those between 30 and 39 (497.79). On the other hand, the lowest rate is among minors of 11 years and under (314.20) and people between 60 and 69 years (367.12).

The regions of Extremadura (919.58), Galicia (903.49) and the Canary Islands (857.73) remain in the very high risk category, while Melilla is still leading the way towards recovery, with just 200.55, followed by Madrid (226.45), Castilla-La Mancha (226.71) and Andalucía (267.34).

Both the Valencian Community (297.22) and the Region of Murcia (433) are now below the national Spanish average.

Coronavirus infections

The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health of 54,147 new coronavirus infections on March 22.

These figures are higher than those of the same day last week, when 36,066 positives were reported, but lower than the 64,597 cases reported between Friday and Tuesday of that same week.

In the past two weeks, 206,856 positive cases have been registered, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 11,378,784.

Hospitalisations

Although the number of people admitted for Covid to hospitals throughout Spain is somewhat higher than on Friday (4,686 compared to 4,580), in general, the hospital occupancy figures, and especially those of the ICU, are better than those of last week.

There are 552 ICU patients (last Friday there were 597 and a week ago 682) representing 6.06% of the beds occupied in intensive care (on Friday, 6.55% and last Tuesday, 7.48%). In addition, in the last 24 hours, there have been 491 admissions and 269 discharges.

Fatalities

The Covid-related fatalities reported on Tuesday March 22 represent the total deaths registered over the weekend and on Monday.

In all, a further 350 people have lost their lives to coronavirus, up from 281 on the same day last week, which brings the overall death toll since the health crisis began to 102.053.

Vaccination data

The last date the vaccination data for Spain was updated was on March 18, when 38,945,187 people had been vaccinated, which represents 92.3% of the population over the age of 12.

To date, 32.2% of children aged between 5 and 11 have received both doses of the paediatric vaccine.

92.30% of people over the age of 70 have received the booster dose, but the figures fall off sharply with the younger age groups, and only 34.67% of those aged between 20 and 29 have been administered the third jab.
