ARCHIVED - Incidence falls to half of highest rate: Spain Covid update February 11
As the sixth wave recedes, fatalities have skyrocketed in Spain to double last week’s figure
Spain heads towards the weekend on a positive note since daily infection figures have once again plummeted and the cumulative incidence rate has fallen to half of what it was just three short weeks ago. However, this is clouded by the fact that Covid-related deaths are soaring week after week, bringing the sixth wave of the pandemic to a tragic end.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health reported an additional 53,055 new Covid infections on Thursday February 10. This is a huge reduction on the same day last week, when 74,368 cases were registered, and just one seventh of the highest figures recorded during the health crisis – 372,000 infections in early January.
In the past two weeks, a total of 742,512 positives have been registered, bringing the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 10,555,196.

Between January 28 and February 10, the autonomous communities have carried out 1,252,677 diagnostic tests, resulting in a positivity rate of 30.11%. This is a big decrease, but the figure is still much higher from the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of 5%.
Cumulative incidence rate
The incidence rate across Spain has fallen a further 126 points on February 10 to 1,566 cases per 100,000 inhabitants as the sixth wave peters out almost as quickly as it started. In just three weeks, this indicator has plummeted from a peak of 3,418 cases to almost half.
By communities, Cantabria is now the one with the highest cumulative incidence, with 2,371 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the Region of Murcia and Catalonia. At the opposite extreme, the region with this lowest score is Andalucía, with 592 points, only ahead of Canarias (650).
However, this indicator has decreased in all regions in the last 24 hours.
Children under the age of 11, the last to start being vaccinated, still have the highest figure, with 2,531 cases. They are followed by the group of young people between 12 and 19, with 2,202 points, while the lowest record for this indicator is found among adults between 60 and 69, with 865 cases per 100,000.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Overall occupancy in Spain has fallen from 11.58% to 10.92% since yesterday, while in the case of the ICUs, these percentages have dropped from 18.12% to 17.41%.
There are currently 13,623 people admitted to hospital for Covid (down from 14,440 on Wednesday) while 1,633 people are being treated in intensive care for more serious symptoms (down from 1,700).
Sadly, the good news ends there as Thursday was marked by a tragically high number of Covid-related fatalities – 393. This is more than double last week’s figure of 183 and brings the overall death toll since the health crisis began to 95,606.
In the last week alone, 775 people have lost their lives across Spain.

Vaccination data
As of February 10, 38,366,565 people have been double jabbed in Spain, which represents 90.0% of the population over the age of 12. In addition, 39,143,499 people, or 92.8%, have received their first vaccination.
