ARCHIVED - Increase of 26,560 in Spanish Covid case total across the weekend
As there are no totals published over the weekend the rise is usually quite pronounced on a Monday
On Friday the Spanish Ministry of Health reported 566,326. cases of Covid-19.
No data is published at the weekend, so the next set of data was published on Monday evening, covering both Saturday and Sunday and up to 14:00 on Monday, and totalled 593,730, a difference of 27,404.
Even if the new total is spread across the three days, this still gives an average of 9,134 cases a day. although the fact that the total number of new cases this weekend was "only" 844 more than across last weekend is being seen as a positive indicator that the speed of the acceleeration is slowing somewhat.
With this level of cases though, it's always dangerous to be complacent and with the WHO warning that there are likely to be considerably more deaths as the weather cools down and we all retreat indoors, it's certainly too early to be making optimistic noises about the evolution of this "second wave".
Regardless of whether 28,000 new cases in just 3 days is positive or not, other indicators do make this questionable. For example, the cumulative incidence, which measures the number of cases in the last 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants, broke yet another record this weekend, with 247.66 positives per 100,000, practically double the figure a month ago.
Fatalities: Over the weekend 101 people have died from coronavirus in Spain, and 207 in the last week, bringing the total up to 29,848.
Hospitalisations
The number of people hospitalized due to the epidemic in the last week is 1,976. Andalusia is the autonomous region that has registered the most hospitalizations in the last seven days, with 350. It is followed by Madrid (339), Castilla-León and Murcia with 178 each, and Galicia (170). The hospitalization rate continues to rise; from 7.5% on Friday to 8.5%.
At this time, a total of 9,044 patients remain admitted for COVID-19. In the last week, 138 people have been admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
