ARCHIVED - Infections and hospitalisations creep up: Spain Covid update June 20
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
All of the important Covid data has suffered an increase across Spain in the last week
With the official start of summer just around the corner and the weather steadily improving, Spain’s tourism industry has experienced a terrific rebound, with thousands of holidaymakers flocking to the cities and coasts every day. It’s probably unsurprising then that Spain’s Covid data is also experiencing a rebound, albeit a far less welcome one.
Over the last seven days, all of the vital statistics used to judge the pandemic have risen, although the 7-day incidence rate is hovering at just under 50% of the 14-day figure, which usually indicates that infections should begin to decline.
Coronavirus infections
The autonomous communities have notified the Ministry of Health of 48,272 new cases of Covid on Friday June 17, compared to 42,456 on the same day last week. Of the new infections, approximately half, 23,495 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 12,563,399.
Cumulative incidence rate
The average incidence of coronavirus in over 60s for the past 14 days has risen once more to 612.39 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, after registering at 589.82 cases on Tuesday.
In the past two weeks, a total of 75,434 positives have been registered in this age group.
Andalucía is still faring the best of all the autonomous communities, with just 247.73 cases, followed by Asturias (375.65) and the Region of Murcia (401.15).
For several weeks, no region had breached the 1,000-case mark but Madrid has rebounded and registered a cumulative incidence rate of 1,038.84 infections per 100,000 inhabitants on Friday.
The Valencian Community remains well below the Spanish national average, with 402.45 cases.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 6,788 patients admitted and positive for Covid throughout Spain (6,763 on Tuesday) while 340 are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (342 on Tuesday).
Overall, 5.51% of all hospital beds are taken up by Covid-positive patients (up from 5.50%) while the occupancy rate in intensive care stands at 3.82%.
The ministry registered an additional 243 Covid-related fatalities compared to 194 on the same day last week, which brings the death toll since the start of the health crisis to 107,482.
Covid testing
Between June 7 and 13, the autonomous communities have carried out 157,018 diagnostic tests in people over 60 years of age, resulting in a positivity rate of 30.06%, up from 29.52% on Tuesday.
Vaccination data
As of Friday June 17, a total of 39,094,061 people over the age of 12, representing 92.7% of the population, are double jabbed while 39,237,978 people (93%) have received at least one dose.
