ARCHIVED - Intensive care admissions rise 13 per cent: Spain Covid update July 11
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Hospitalisations across Spain are on the rise but remain in the low-risk category
The summer season is now in full swing in Spain and coronavirus cases are once again exploding, pushed on by the more virulent BA Omicron subvariants, which are quickly becoming the most common infections. Since the last update from the Ministry of Health, the cumulative incidence rate has risen by 90 points and now far exceeds the barrier of a thousand cases by 100,000 people.
Hospital occupancy also continues to rise, although it remains at a low risk level. Although the incidence seems out of control, the numbers of infections and deaths show a slight decrease compared to the previous week.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
The number of people hospitalised for coronavirus in Spain has grown by 17.8% during the last week, with significant increases in all the autonomous communities, except for the Balearic Islands.
In addition, there has been a 13.1% rise in Covid patients in intensive care and the Ministry of Health has notified 619 new deaths from the pandemic since last Friday.
The latest update, published on July 8, shows that there are currently 12,080 people hospitalised for Covid-related illnesses, 1,831 more than the same day the previous week.
Moreover, the number of patients being treated for more serious conditions in Spain’s ICUs has exploded, rising to 508.
The overall death toll since the start of the health crisis has risen to 108,730.
Cumulative incidence rate
On Tuesday, the national average among those over 60 was 1,135 cases per 100,000 inhabitants; in just three days, this has jumped 90 points to stand at 1,225 cases. It’s important to remember that the 14-day incidence rate now only covers the older population and not the total average, so the ‘real’ figure is likely to be far higher.
Virtually all regions now exceed the barrier of a thousand cases. The highest rates have been recorded in La Rioja (2,283), Extremadura (1,678), Ceuta (1,647), Cantabria (1,632), Madrid (1,631), Castilla-La Mancha (1,588) and the Canary Islands (1,548).
The only region that remains below 500 points is Andalucía (482). The Balearic Islands have the next lowest incidence, with 1,170 cases per 100,000.
Coronavirus infections
According to the Ministry of Health, 83,613 new cases of coronavirus have been officially reported, around 10,000 more than on Tuesday.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 12,973,615.
Vaccination data
Although the pace of the vaccination campaign in Spain has slowed down considerably, this country still has one of the best coverage rates in the world. As of Monday July 11, 92.7% of the population has been fully inoculated while 39,245,458 people, or 93% over the age of 12, have received at least one dose.
In addition, 53.8% of the population has had a booster jab.
