The City Council of Marbella plans to focus on social spending and public investments
At the end of last week, the Central government in Spain announced that the national budgets for 2022 had been finalised, with more funding than ever allocated to the autonomous communities to stimulate regional economic recovery. As a result, the mayor of Marbella, Angeles Munoz, has confirmed that the local accounts for next year are ready and will definitively focus on encouraging continued social spending and increasing public investments that are vital for the development of the city. In addition, the mayor has promised to “maintain an absolute freeze on all taxes” for the duration of 2022.
In a move that will relieve property owners in the Andalucían municipality, the City Council does not plan to apply the 50% increase in the Real Estate Tax (IBI) for second homes that the central government is pushing as officials in Marbella consider this to be “tax abuse” and view this housing as essential for the economic activity of the area.
Likewise, the Tax on Constructions, Installations and Works (ICIO), as well as urban planning rates and bonuses will remain the same next year. In addition, the council is considering freezing the rates for establishments that use public spaces for chairs and tables, while licences for opening a new business or changing ownership will continue to be free of charge.
The mayor has ensured that free public transport will also be preserved, an initiative that represents a cost of 7 million euros for the City Council “but that has a direct impact on young people, the elderly and families with fewer resources.”
Giving a strong indication that the economy is recovering in Marbella, the mayor confirmed that there has been a steady increase in the number of new projects registered by urban planning. On Monday October 11 alone, the local government granted licences for 98 homes in Nueva Andalucía with a value of 18 million euros, in addition to the more than 5 million for a sports hotel in Nagüeles and the initial approval for the construction of 35 properties in an area of 35,000 square meters in the Marbella Club area.
